POSITION: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, ELEMENTARY

JOB GOALS: The Assistant Principal provides administrative support to the building principal in the areas of Curriculum & Instruction, Staff Supervision & Evaluation, Building Operations, and Student and Family Engagement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with concentration in Administration, Supervision and/or Curriculum.
  • Licensure or immediate eligibility to acquire licensure as a Principal/Assistant Principal by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • At least five years of experience as a teacher, related service provider, or administrator at the elementary level.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Knowledge of current practices in elementary curriculum and pedagogy, including implementation of curriculum and evaluation of teaching practice.
  • Demonstrated professional knowledge of anti-racist and culturally responsive teaching and leadership practices. 
  • Demonstrated ability with developmentally appropriate programs, interdisciplinary curriculum, and integrated Special Education programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and tangible evidence of ability to proactively respond to the needs of students and families.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assume leadership of the school in the absence of the principal.
  • Collaborate with the principal to establish and maintain rules and procedures for student and staff safety.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of the school building and grounds and report needed work and repairs to the appropriate persons.
  • Effectively implement school and district action plans in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Participate in curriculum development activities commensurate with school and district goals.
  • Collaborate with District leadership, department heads and teachers in order to support the implementation of programming and curriculum.
  • Emphasize student academic achievement, inclusive educational environments, and social and emotional development as the primary outcomes of the school program.
  • Assist Principal in the inclusive placement of students.
  • Works with the student, parents, and social work personnel to develop appropriate programmatic plans to meet the needs of all students and provide early intervention when necessary.
  • Participate in Special Education Team meetings when appropriate.
  • Act as the 504 Plan Coordinator for the school and oversee all aspects of 504 implementation in accordance with regulations and district procedures.
  • Collaborate with the principal to develop and maintain positive staff morale.
  • Implement the school’s Discipline Code of Conduct and work with the principal to make revisions when appropriate.
  • Maintain high visibility and accessibility in the school.
  • Assist the principal in identifying, planning, and implementing staff development programs in accordance with assessed needs.
  • Collaborate with the principal on the educator evaluation system and assume responsibility for some evaluations of teachers and other building staff.
  • Assist the principal on hiring and other personnel decisions.
  • Assist the Principal with communications to stakeholders: Students, Parents, Teachers and Staff and the community. 
  • Engage in relevant professional development activities.
  • Represent the principal at professional meetings and community events in the principal’s absence.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SUPERVISES: Classroom teachers, special subject teachers and support staff in the

building.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 205 Days in accordance with contract between the

Arlington School Committee and the Arlington Administrators Association
