Arlington County is Hiring a WSS ENGINEERING DATA MANAGEMENT INTERN Near Arlington, VA

This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path. 

Key info:

  • We anticipate filling this position between May 1, 2024 to July 24, 2024 depending on the needs of the assigned department. 

  • Interns must be ready to begin employment by September 2, 2024, but some may begin earlier.

  • This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.

  • Interns are also expected to participate in both in-office work assignments as well as a member of the in-person training cohort.

Department of Environmental Services

The Engineering Data Management Intern will assist the Water Sewer Streets Bureau in managing the maintenance, renewal and capital planning of 1,058 lane miles of street, 443 miles of sidewalk, 525 miles of water mains, and 458 miles of sanitary sewer mains. 

Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include: 

  • Performing the collection, validation, and analysis of data to support the WSS bureau's predictive and preventative maintenance and asset renewal planning;

  • Defining the consequence of failure scores for the County's water and sanitary sewer assets enabling WSS to launch a formal asset risk assessment program;

  • Conducting engineering records research to verify and update pertinent data for water, sewer, and street assets, such as mains, manholes, hydrants, valves, guardrails and retaining walls;

  • Utilizing programs such as ArcGIS Pro, Cartegraph, and Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Excel, PowerBI) to generate reports, analyze/visualize data, create maps, and determine deferred maintenance costs/cost allocation, for use in future capital replacement/upgrade program planning; and

  • Preparing as-built documentation to update record drawings using Adobe.

Minimum: 

Recent, 2023 and/or 2024 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have:

  • No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and

  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

*Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience. Degree Requirements: Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Data Science Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, Economics or related discipline. Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August, 2024 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field as described above.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, PowerBI, etc.);

  • Familiarity with Cartegraph or similar asset management software;

  • Familiarity with ESRI (GIS) software; 

  • Familiarity with Adobe software; and/or

  • Experience with data analysis and asset management.

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver’s License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license, or the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform duties at other locations and if applicable, must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicants driving record.

Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) M-F 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. This is not a fully remote opportunity. 

Employees will be expected to attend in-person classroom trainings as scheduled.
