Arlington County, VA is Hiring a PARK RANGER I Near Arlington, VA

Position Information

The Parks and Natural Resources Division, within Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is hiring a Park Ranger I to support and lead activities in the parks and assist with the daily administration and planning for the Park Ranger Program, which combines park security functions with educational programs about safe park usage, environmental awareness, park history, and natural park features.
The Park Ranger I patrols designated park areas by foot, bike, or vehicle, provides information about and enforces park regulations, administers routine first aid care, identifies recurrent usage problems and park areas needing attention or more Ranger visibility, and gives informal talks and staffs information booths.
Specific duties include:

  • Supporting strategic goals, policies, procedures, and performance measures for the Park Ranger Program to align with County values while prioritizing safety, continually improving performance, and providing exceptional customer service;
  • Assisting the Park Ranger II with daily administration of the Park Ranger Program, including preparing reports and written documents, such as incident reports, background information for Gram responses, and usage reports;
  • Making purchases and tracking expenditures for specific activities, providing daily oversight and assists in the training of Park Ranger Aides who perform seasonal work;
  • Patrolling parkland and public spaces, enforcing park rules, providing conflict resolution for park users, clearing debris from trails and other minor maintenance tasks, including acting as on-site contact for park users in emergency situations while coordinating with police and fire during emergency response;
  • Serving as liaison to the Police and Fire Department to coordinate with during emergency responses and developing services and programs that promote a safe, functional, and inclusive environment for park users;
  • Serving as a responsive liaison between the Ranger unit and external stakeholders with interactions such as media requests, public meetings, volunteer events, presentations, conferences, educational programs, emergencies, and incidental conversations via phone or email; and
  • Designing and delivering educational and informational programs and activities about park safety and history, environmental issues, and natural park features.

Selection Criteria

Minimums:

  • High School Diploma, GED or the equivalent; plus
  • Some experience as a Park Ranger, which includes interaction with the public, such as camp counselor, naturalist, museum interpreter, recreational worker, scout leader or similar field.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; and
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
Substitution: A college degree in a directly related field may be substituted for the year of experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Designing and delivering informational and safety programs;
  • Working in or as a liaison with a public safety department; and
  • Certification in CPR and/or first aid.

Special Requirements

Employee must possess or obtain a CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of placement in role.
The applicant must possess by the time of appointment a valid Driver License. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
This position requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time during the work shift and will need to lift or move objects that are up to 50 pounds.
A pre-employment background check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information

The pay ranges listed above are effective June 30, 2024.
Work Hours: 11:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. 4 days per week on a rotating schedule. Weekend work required periodically and scheduled based on a rotating cycle. Must be available for immediate callback for inclement weather and other emergencies.
