Arlington County, VA is Hiring an INMATE SERVICES COUNSELOR I Near Arlington, VA

Position Information

The Sheriff's Office is hiring an Inmate Services Counselor Ito perform professional work classifying and counseling inmates in the Arlington County Detention Facility. The Counselor will be responsible for the initial classification and case management of an ethnically diverse inmate population, some of whom speak other languages and have limited or no English skills.
Specific duties include:

  • Assessing and assigning housing areas for inmates according to various types of background information;
  • Conducting crisis intervention and conflict resolution;
  • Working with inmates to develop jail adjustment treatment plans;
  • Conducting an on-going review of program, treatment, and classification through case management;
  • Referring inmates to programs and assisting with programming and program development;
  • Developing Reentry/Discharge plans and referrals for inmates;
  • Preparing progress letters for the Sheriff and Judges;
  • Conducting drug screenings;
  • Maintaining confidential criminal histories and inmate record files using computers and other sources; and
  • Conducting tours and lectures for the public.
In addition, the employee may perform duties for the Pre-Trial Release Program to include:
  • Reviewing inmate files to determine eligibility for Pre-trial release and Pre-trial Electronic Home Detention;
  • Reporting to the courts on recommendations for pre-trial programs, pre-trial compliance, and violations; and
  • Performing drug testing on program participants.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, or related field;
  • One year of experience providing social, psychological, or correctional services to clients and/or inmates.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis. A Master's degree in a closely related field which included a relevant practicum may substitute for the experience requirement.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Providing services to an inmate population in a correctional setting;
  • Conducting crisis intervention and/or social services;
  • Performing case management and/or the classification of inmates; and/or
  • Bilingual ability in English and one or more languages.

Special Requirements

Candidates must successfully complete a character background investigation (which includes a polygraph examination), and a drug screening test. The background investigation is conducted by the Sheriff’s Office.

Additional Information

The pay ranges listed above are effective June 30, 2024.
Work Hours: Shifts may vary and may fall anywhere between 7:00 a.m. - midnight. Must be available for emergency call-back situations, weekends, and holidays.

This is a civilian (non-sworn) position that is not in the Arlington County competitive service. Duties of this position include working around inmates in the Arlington County Detention Facility.
