Arlington County, VA is Hiring an EARLY CHILDHOOD RECREATION SUPERVISOR Near Arlington, VA

Position Information

Arlington County’s Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking an Early Childhood Recreation Supervisor to take charge of curriculum development, program design, organization, and implementation in support of one of the half-day Creative Preschooler’s and Summer Camp Programs, which serves a diverse audience of up to 24 children daily, from three to five years of age, including children that may have disabilities.
Specific duties include:
  • Planning, organizing, and implementing daily activities in accordance with pre-established curriculum;
  • Supervising, directing, and actively participating in daily preschool activities at the assigned recreation center;
  • Evaluating programs and activities seasonally for potential improvements;
  • Recording and reporting children's progress to parents and preparing semi-annual child evaluations;
  • Enforcing federal, state, and local policies, procedures, rules, and administrative regulations;
  • Performing administrative duties including, monitoring the operational supply budget, ordering supplies, preparing attendance reports, and providing text for calendars and fliers; and
  • Supervising program staff at the assigned center.
The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills to communicate with parents and children as well as strong problem solving and supervision skills to manage the needs of staff, volunteers, and parents. The ideal candidate will also have a deep desire to work with a culturally diverse population and develop/maintain relationships with parent groups and/or community organizations.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or field directly related to program area; and
  • Some experience as a teacher and/or teaching assistant in a preschool or day care environment, or in a job related to the care of preschool aged children.

Desirable:
Preference may be given to candidates in possession of one or more of the following:
  • Child education program management experience to include assessing the needs of preschool age children, supervising programs/activities, and training staff;
  • Working knowledge of Arlington County and Virginia Department of Social Services State licensing regulations; and/or
  • CPR/First Aid certifications or Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials.

Special Requirements

This position is required to:
  • Attend monthly preschool teacher meetings and 16 hours of training a year;
  • Complete Medication Administration Training (MAT) provided by employer;
  • Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening; and
  • Possess a CPR and First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment (provided by employer).

Driver's License:
This position will require travel around Arlington County for various meetings and field inspections. The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Background Check:
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check will also be completed before hire.

Additional Information

The pay ranges listed above are effective June 30, 2024.

Work Hours:
This position operates year-round. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., including afternoon meetings 1-2 times per month and occasional evening and weekend hours.

Program Information:
The Creative Preschooler’s program consists of two classes:
  • Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays -OR-
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays
Some children may participate in both classes. The program runs from September to May. The Summer Camp program consists of 8 weeks of camp, from June to August. Children may participate in some or all camp weeks.
