Arlington County, VA is Hiring an ADULT DAY RECREATION LEADER (30 HOURS PER WEEK) Near Arlington, VA

Position Information

The Department of Human Services is seeking a part-time (30 hours per week) Adult Day Recreation Leader to coordinate the therapeutic recreation program at the Walter Reed Adult Day Health Care Center. This position will work closely with a multidisciplinary team consisting of a nurse, another recreation therapist, and a team of program leaders. Residents served come from a diverse cultural background in Arlington County and may have age related dementia, cognitive impairments, developmental disabilities, may be limited in their physical functioning, may need personal care assistance, or have limited social connections. The program's vision is for each person to achieve the highest level of independence while participating in therapeutic activities such as adaptive yoga, tai chi, sports, arts, and connecting to the community.

Specific duties include:

  • Assessing participants' needs and interests to provide appropriate therapeutic activities;
  • Organizing and maintaining daily schedule of group and 1:1 activities;
  • Training and supporting program leaders in best practices of person centered care in the adult day health care setting and the field of therapeutic recreation;
  • Training and coordinating interns;
  • Communicating with families about the participants' involvement in therapeutic recreation programs;
  • Connecting with community agencies to provide additional activities and services; and
  • Tracking therapeutic recreation supplies and expenditures.

Selection Criteria

Minimums: A Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation, or related field including music therapy, art therapy or dance, plus some experience planning, developing and implementing therapeutic recreation programs.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working with people with dementia, cognitive impairment, or age-related diagnoses;
  • Working with individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities;
  • Experience with planning and implementing person centered care;
  • Working in a licensed program setting;
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Therapist; and/or
  • Oral proficiency in English/Spanish.

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.

Licenses/Certifications: Possession or obtainment of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification OR certification issued by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals within 6 months of hire.

If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-employment criminal records check and Virginia Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry release will be conducted.

Applicant will be required to provide police and Central Registry clearance records upon final consideration for employment.

Applicant must present a valid certification in CPR by effective date of employment.

Employment restrictions: To ensure that dual relationships are avoided and that employees who are also clients do not relate to their service provider as co-professionals, employees will not be hired by the County to provide or support services to the team or program in which they are current clients:

  • You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (exception Crisis Intervention services).
  • At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Flexible schedule of 30 hours per week between the core work hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
