We’re seeking a talented and versatile Software Engineering Manager to join our high performing team. This role will play a key role in the learner’s experience across the EdPlus digital portfolio. Leading the engineering team, this position will oversee the engineering team responsible for delivering robust technology solutions and partnering with the other leads to iterate, optimize and enhance digital experiences for online learners in the realm of leading edge technologies like natural language processing, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and internet of things.
Working closely with stakeholders to guide the technical landscape of our products to establish standards and integrations across projects in creating efficiencies and scalable solutions. The engineering Manager will also manage, mentor and oversee work produced by not only EdPlus developers but also student developers and contractors.
The Solutions Engineering team is responsible for creating solutions and enhancing our current technology stack for a variety of challenges as part of an innovative environment refining how users engage with higher education. Working collaboratively in diverse teams, creates forward thinking and thoughtful experiences ensuring web products support ASU and EdPlus overall strategy and goals.
Essential duties:

  • Be a subject matter expert in the product domain with high autonomy in AI strategy and adoption.
  • Work closely with the product management team and stakeholders to ensure we’re building the best solutions serving the needs of our consumers.
  • Drive roadmap creation and execution of AI/ML solutions.
  • Understand organizational needs for performing exploratory data analysis (EDA), building/validating models, and deploying models into production.
  • Participate in product development discussions and map functional requirements to technical design and a project schedule.
  • Monitor and report out on product performance, opportunities and gaps.
  • Partner with leadership to influence and drive organization design, contribution and prioritization.
  • Present and evangelize solutions to internal teams and stakeholders.
  • Lead teams that deliver on multiple projects of increasing dependencies in an ambiguous or high‐impact area
  • Measure the impact of your team and set clear expectations and goals.
  • Contribute technically to projects, participate in code reviews, invent and streamline processes.
  • Work effectively with cross functional partners and stakeholders to set and achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Day to day management of a growing team, including hiring, coaching and performance management.
  • Identify gaps within the team and work to fill gaps with talent, experience or training develop, onboard or implement new tools and processes.
  • Establish and enforce effective team processes that scale.
  • Champion for quality and best practices to ensure building and maintaining a performant, scalable and reliable system.
  • Have technical discussions with team members to agree on product scope and delivery schedules.
  • Guide effective documentation and communication of engineering processes to both EdPlus engineers, student engineers and contractors.
  • Maintain an operating system that helps translate vision and business goals into objectives that give teams clarity and autonomy.
  • Assess team priorities and work through daily standups to help manage workload.
  • Contribute to the larger IT community across the University.
  • Assume or coordinate other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Information Systems, or related field AND five years of related experience, which includes three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired qualifications:

  • Experience in problem solving, design, rapid prototyping, coding and debugging skills.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Evidence of a track record of cross‐group/cross‐discipline collaboration
  • Ability to use collaboration skills
  • Ability to be adaptable and agile in development.
  • Track record of guiding teams through unstructured technical problems to deliver business impact.
  • Understanding of data and/or Machine learning science fundamentals
  • Proficiency in core programming languages and data science packaging: Python, SQL, BigQuery, Data Modeling, Data mining, Tensorflow, PyTorch, Pandas, Jupyter etc.
  • Proficiency with traditional ML and deep learning techniques: CNNs, RNNs, LSTMs, GANs, model tuning, and validation of developed algorithms
  • Familiarity with Data Management, Statistical Modeling, Data Visualization, and web behavior data.
  • Familiarity with classification supervised and unsupervised models.
  • Familiarity with decision making models, such as reinforcement learning.
  • Familiarity with prediction models, including time series models, regressors.
  • Familiarity with GenAI models, including LLMs.
  • Familiarity with cloud services platforms like GCP or AWS or Azure.
  • A passion for understanding the user, and a strong communicator of the user's perspective in building the best solutions for the most meaningful problems.
  • Experience with the agile development process, including scheduling and estimation of AI/ML software project tasks.
  • Evidence of a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.

EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.
Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
