Description

University College at Arizona State University invites applications for an Instructor - Explore. The Explore program empowers learners to design their journey at ASU by identifying strengths, interests and skills to connect to their goals after graduation. Learners in the Explore program are in the essential stage of exploring who they are and what matters to them as they research and make decisions around their ASU journey and designing possible futures for themselves. An important step in this design process is choosing a major that offers the educational experiences and knowledge that aligns with the interests and goals of the student. The Instructor will teach from the suite of courses offered by Explore that are designed to support students in their academic, professional and personal exploration journey. As part of the Explore team that focuses on holistic support of learners and their success, this role will have an active and pivotal role in student success, persistence and retention initiatives. Additionally, the Instructor will contribute to the curricular efforts of the Explore program.

The Explore program is designed to help learners build and articulate their personal and professional stories so they can gain important insights, forge meaningful connections, and differentiate themselves in an ever-changing job market. Courses offered by Explore support storytelling through the learning of design thinking steps and developing key mindsets to help learners find ways to their academic, professional and personal futures. Specifically, learners engage in exploration of self-interests, values and skills while reflecting on past experiences and participate in experiential learning opportunities to shape their future careers and lives.

Learners in these courses will range from first-time first-year students to graduating seniors of all academic backgrounds, both immersion and online. Course assignments are at the undergraduate level, and may occur in a variety of modalities (online, on-ground, hybrid), primarily on the Tempe campus, with some course offerings at the Polytechnic and Downtown campuses. Course load is a maximum of 15 credits per semester.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses including: ASU 101-UC, ASU 230, UNI 250, UNI 270 and UNI 194. The candidate should have excellent facilitation skills, strong curriculum development skills, and be passionate about working with exploring college students. These courses feature facilitated activities and experiences rather than a lecture-based approach; an interactive pedagogical approach is required. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the unit and university. Salary is competitive commensurate with experience. The candidate must reside in Arizona, or be willing to relocate.

To best support the exploring student, the Explore program is evolving with a focus on serving learners in a variety of modalities, empowering them to design their ASU journey and helping them connect their experience at ASU to their goals post-graduation. University College as a whole, is focused on broadening its offerings for all learners from every major and at any stage of their academic journey. University College’s goal is to disrupt the 20th century model of higher education by:

  • Designing personalized learning experiences to end achievement disparities for students of all backgrounds.
  • Designing for an integrated work and learning future.
  • Designing services to support learners at scale by using design thinking, analytics, automation, and intelligent systems.
  • University College is guided by 5 key design principles: learners first, be bold, simplify, personalize, and collaborate. A wide range of new programs and services are currently under development.
