The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is looking for a certified SPECIAL EDUCATION (SPED), ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE GRADES, or SECONDARY EDUCATION TEACHER to provide instruction in Elementary or High School academic subjects to inmates who have not achieved their high school diploma.

Job Duties:

- Develops, implements, and services individual and teacher-designed education lesson plans
- Exhibits collaboration between classroom and Special Education teachers
- Makes academic assessments, tracks progress, and maintains accurate educational records
- Develops and corrects diagnostic tests
- Uses effective classroom management techniques and ensures the security of all testing instruments
- Provides monthly work evaluations to management and consults with highly qualified teachers on subject matter concerns or questions
- Escorts and supervises inmates, tutors, aids, or clerks in the educational building/classroom
- Drives on State business
- Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
- Laws, rules, regulations, and policies governing education and teaching
- Current instructional methodologies and counseling techniques
- Appropriate testing procedures and interpretation of specific tests
- Personal computer and software sufficient to perform daily tasks

- Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships
- Multi-tasking and organization

- Time management

Ability to:
- Lift/carry 20 lbs.
- Push/pull 20 lbs.

- Workday and/or evening shifts
- Provide academic instruction and counseling to inmates
- Provide individual and group instruction and education counseling
- Work cooperatively with other education staff
- Learn and adhere to departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

Selective Preference(s):

- Highly qualified status in Science, English, Physical Education, Social Studies, Language Arts, or Mathematics
- Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement
- Arizona Department of Education certified Special Education (SPED) teacher

Pre-Employment Requirements:

- Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. And a current valid Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Teaching Certificate in the approved area of Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education.

- Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation and a drug test.

- Effective August 1, 2019, an applicant’s employment will also be contingent on the successful completion of a medical/physical examination.

- Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Card

- If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

- In an effort to maintain a safe environment, all employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter.

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Retirement:

Positions in this classification participate in the Correctional Officer Retirement Program (CORP). An Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) teacher, who currently has 5 or more years of credited service, can request a waiver to remain in ASRS.

Current ADCRR Employees: Consult with your respective Human Resources Liaison if you are in a different retirement plan than the one indicated above.
