Arena BioWorks is Hiring a Scientist, Functional Genomics Near Cambridge, MA

As a Scientist working on the Functional Genomics Team, you will focus on developing and implementing advanced CRISPR-based screening approaches with a goal of deciphering biological functions of genes in the context of disease through mechanistic investigation into gene function and regulatory networks. The Functional Genomics Team will work closely with the Cellular Models Team to integrate disease-relevant cell-based models with functional assays for high-throughput screening to identify therapeutic targets and assess physiologically relevant target engagement. The successful development and implementation of functional genomics platforms will have broad applications in biomedical research and in the development of novel therapeutics for human diseases.

The qualifying candidate is expected to thrive in a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative environment. The desired candidate is passionate about developing and implementing functional genomics platforms with a goal of addressing outstanding biological questions and generating meaningful insights into human disease. They also strongly value collaborating with scientists across teams and scientific areas and enjoy continuously learning from the expertise of their peers and colleagues.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop state-of-the-art pooled and arrayed CRISPR screening platforms employing high-dimensional functional assays based on Perturb-seq, high-content cell imaging, flow cytometry and other technologies
  • Implement and validate strategies to design and deploy custom sgRNA libraries and new types of CRISPR modalities as needed
  • Translate scalable disease-relevant phenotypic assays to automated laboratory equipment for high-throughput screening applications
  • Independently develop and follow detailed protocols and troubleshoot problems
  • Work closely with a wide range of lab members, including assisting with experimental design and implementation, and training and instructing others in highly specialized techniques
  • Collaborate across teams to develop and implement high-dimensional functional assays for target identification and development of targeted therapeutic strategies
  • Maintain laboratory notebook and prepare written data reports, figures, and presentations of the research in the form of progress reports, manuscripts, and/or internal and external research presentations

Qualifications:

  • Degree in molecular or cell biology or related field with a demonstrated record of productivity, Ph.D. or M.S. preferred but equivalent experience levels considered
  • 3 years of experience in a research-related field required
  • Working knowledge in CRISPR genome editing and functional genomics including large-scale CRISPR screens
  • Proficiency in mammalian cell culture and molecular genomic techniques, including Next Generation Sequencing sample preparation. Experience with primary cell and/or iPSC culture and single cell sequencing is a plus
  • Experience with sophisticated high-content screening assays and readouts such as microscopy-based imaging assays, flow cytometry, spatial transcriptomics, single cell omics, and small molecule screening
  • Interest in learning and troubleshooting new cell biology techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, including to supervise and train junior associates
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organizational and functional boundaries
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, both scientifically and in the ability to prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities
  • Familiarity with lab automation, project management software, ELNs, and LIMS
  • Some experience with R, Python, and analyzing high throughput data is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated by publication of research papers and presentations
