Summary:
The Director for Social Justice Ministry promotes Catholic Social Teaching through awareness, education, advocacy, and ministry. The Director serves as the subject matter specialist on social doctrine in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, offering resources to parishes, Catholic schools, and Catholic organizations in the development of faithful citizenship, justice and peace issues, Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and other missionary and outreach programs as assigned. The Director is responsible for fundamental integration of the New Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship in a "pastoral de conjunto" to serve the multicultural pastoral needs of children, youth, young adults, adults, persons with disabilities and seniors.
The Director is the representative of the Archbishop in matters pertaining to justice and peace. This role represents the Archdiocese before government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other organizations that promote the welfare of society in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
Position Responsibilities:
  • *Stay up-to-date on communication from the Church Magisterium and different coordinating bodies of the college of bishops (The Magisterium, USCCB, TCCB, etc).
  • Be informed of any important gathering or activity internal or external to the Catholic Church in National, Regional, or Local matters pertaining to this role.
  • *Work with pastors and parish leaders to create or support parish-based ministries that encourage and promote Catholic Social Teaching.
  • *Provide Resource review and recommendations for parishes.
  • *Analyze along with the Department Head for Communications the probable outcomes of political, business and social data, also using knowledge of legal precedents and the social doctrine of the Church.
  • Study legislation, statutes, decisions, regulations, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies to determine ramifications that would affect in any way the interests of the Catholic Church and its doctrine.
  • Suggest means of interpreting the Social Doctrine of the Church for individuals, public and private organizations, businesses, organizations and institutions.
  • *Offer and discuss with Communications Department and Catholic Charities of San Antonio specific content in support of the USCCB campaigns and priorities: immigration, faithful citizenship, education, global solidarity and poverty awareness.
  • Work closely with the Department Head of the Office for Communications to ensure information is posted regularly, to keep informed of issues critical to the Church and to debrief the DPM Leadership of critical matters of importance. In addition, work closely with Catholic Charities and its CEO/President, to ensure appropriate content in matters of legislative and advocacy work.
  • Collaborate in the creation of Archdiocesan policies pertaining to the area of expertise.
  • Participate in various ways in creating Church environmental directives and policies.
  • *Assist the Archbishop, Bishop, Moderator of the Curia, and Department Heads as needed with additional requests or related tasks.
  • Create and lead on behalf of Archbishop commissions, advisory boards, and task forces to work collaboratively in pastoral initiatives and special assignments when necessary.
  • *Participate in task force teams in creating, planning, annual goals and objectives, evaluating programs and events, in matters of content and attending department meetings as required.
  • *Develop National / Regional / Local Partnerships and Relationships.
  • *Be attentive to the needs of a culturally diverse Archdiocesan population, especially Hispanic, incorporating cultural sensitivity into all facets of the ministry.
  • Inventory and develop partnerships of Lay Ecclesial Movements, internal and external Church organizations
  • *Serve as a liaison to organizations like CCHD and CRS and represent the archdiocese in committees and coalitions related to Justice and Peace. Oversee any committee that serves as an advisory group on issues related to this office. Provide content for ongoing leadership formation, support, and coordination of this group.
  • *Support the development of office budgets focused on goals and implementing strategies
  • *Apply for grants where appropriate to support collaborative and ongoing ministerial work, including the annual CCHD Application Review.
  • Adhere to safety training and protocols on a daily basis, and taking precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of self, others.
  • Responsible for protecting the confidentiality of any information or material obtained in the service with the organization to include but not limited to client names and information, services rendered to clients, donors names and gifts, internal and external investigations or results of any investigations, and financial information.
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy is mandatory.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education
    • Degree in Theology preferred in Social Teachings of the Church or Master's Degree in any science related field in advocacy in politics, law, etc.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in the areas of responsibility.
  • License and Credentials
    • Reliable transportation
    • Valid driver license
    • Valid vehicle insurance
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred
Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
  • Leadership experience in including team-building, coaching, and strategic planning;
  • Extensive working knowledge of Catholic Church teachings and related papal, council, USCCB and pastoral letter documents;
  • Experience with computer software, MS Office products, and social media;
  • A solid grasp on critical thinking and problem solving in context of the mission of the archdiocese;
  • Must be detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, work well independently and on a team;
  • Must have good written and verbal skills;
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and excellence in organizational and project management with the ability to achieve strategic objectives while managing a budget;
  • Ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders with impeccable integrity;
  • Strong analytical skills, basic business intuition, and prudential judgment;
  • Demonstrate maturity as a person, believer and apostle;
  • Proven ability to design and present talks, presentations, and educational and skills training programs;
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure: handles demands of multiple people and prioritizes tasks;

  • Excellent diplomacy, tact and strong negotiation skills;
  • Excellent public speaking skills, detailed planning and organizational skills;
  • Excellent ability to interview and hire qualified candidates as required;
  • Excellent ability to comprehend and explain complex, semi-complex policy and procedure;
  • Must be a Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church;
