Job Purpose
When necessary, the Deputy Communications Officer stands in for the Chief Communications Officer to serve as spokesperson and fulfill other duties as needed
Duties and Responsibilities
The Deputy Communications Officer (DCO) supports the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) in the day-to-day operations of the Secretariat for Communications (SFC), which is comprised of the Archdiocesan Office for Communications and CatholicPhilly, the official digital news agency of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
The DCO helps to plan, develop, and execute proactive and crisis communication strategies in an effort to seize opportunities to promote the good works of the local Church, navigate challenges, and maintain trust and credibility with internal and external stakeholder groups.
Works with the CCO and other staff of the OFC to respond to requests from international, national and local media, both religious and secular.
Works proactively with leaders from Archdiocesan offices, parishes, and ministries to stay abreast of the latest programs, initiatives, news, and information to prepare messaging and well-coordinated communications plans.
Assists with administrative oversight and content development for the Archdiocesan website and various social media platforms.
Helps the CCO provide written communication support to the Archbishop of Philadelphia, including talking points, remarks, statements, and letters, as well as scripts for radio and film.
Provides logistical support and assistance at various news conferences and religious and secular events throughout the year.
Responsible for assisting with issues related to governmental relations, politics, and civic associations as they interact with the Archdiocese and its interests.
This also includes filing quarterly lobbying disclosure reports on behalf of the Archdiocese with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
L iaises with the Archbishop's Office to schedule interviews and events and helps manage his monthly radio and film recording schedule.
Writes media advisories, press releases, and emails for stakeholders of the Archdiocese.
Assists the CCO with office administration and management of day-to-day operations.
These duties include maintaining employee schedules; tracking staff time schedule records; scheduling staff meetings; general project management as required;
and oversight of the office internship program.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Communications / Journalism and a minimum of five years' experience in non-profit or corporate communications is required.
A strong knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings is required.
