Summary Description

This dynamic position offers an excellent mix of administration and filed work to support and coordinate the oldest profession trail crew in the United States. The White Mountain Trails Supervisor is responsible for the administration of AMC’s White Mountain Professional Trail Crew, including the recruitment, training, and oversight of backcountry trail crews working within the White Mountain Region of New Hampshire and Western Maine. Since 1919 AMC’s White Mountain Professional Trail Crew has been a team of highly skilled and dedicated individuals maintaining over 385 miles of non-motorized trails in the White Mountain region. Administrative offices are located at AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and field season trail crews are based out of AMC Camp Dodge Trails Center in the White Mountains, NH.

The White Mountain Trails Supervisor is responsible for project logistics, trail layout, trail signing, and trails facilities maintenance while supporting trail crews in the field ensuring the highest standards of safety and work quality. This position will also work with volunteer leaders, AMC committees, ATC, USFS, various land trusts, and other partners as needed. The WMTS is also responsible for fostering relationships with trail volunteers and regional land managers to ensure future collaboration. Opportunities for professional trail crews outside of the White Mountain region is quite possible in future years. 

The White Mountain Trails Supervisor reports to the AMC Assistant Director of Trails and will work closely with a variety of staff located at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, Highland Center at Crawford Notch, AMC Headquarters in Boston, MA, Western Massachusetts, and Maine. This full-time, exempt position offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and support trails crew of 15 seasonal employees. 
  • Enforce established policies and guidelines to ensure the safe and responsible leadership, site management, transportation, and crew life.
  • Work with government and other cooperators to prioritize and plan trail work projects, which are primarily technical backcountry trail reconstruction or relocation projects requiring bridges as well as rock and wood structures, sometimes in areas of sensitive habitat.
  • Oversee department’s equipment and supplies, including purchasing and inventory.
  • Assist in the development of trail contracts, including cost estimates and trail assessments.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Trails on fundraising, grant writing, and program budget development.
  • Maintain trail condition database and work priority database.
  • Collect reports and hours from crews and compile into annual reports of work hours and accomplishments, including reports for New Hampshire State Parks, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and US Forest Service.
  • Assist in the development and fulfillment of the Trails facility capital and maintenance work.
  • Instruct and develop Skills Training Sessions for professional and volunteer trail crews.
  • Prepare and present trails related programs and trainings to a wide range of audiences such as volunteer groups, land trust conferences, and agency partners. 
  • Serve on internal and external committees related to risk management, trail project collaboration, and recreation and Wilderness management skills development.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Northeast and work some evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with studies in Recreation, Natural Resources Management or other relevant disciplines is desirable.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of trail maintenance and construction, natural resource management, and outdoor programming, with previous supervisory and leadership experience. Experience can be in any combination of staff or volunteer roles.
  • Excellent organizational skills that include the ability to handle many different projects simultaneously and find creative solutions to problems.
  • Proven successful supervisory ability of seasonal employees. 
  • Proficiency in the use of computers with associated word processing, desktop publishing, database programs, and mapping. 
  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds in a professional environment and can interact with the public and volunteers under sometimes challenging conditions
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in a wide range of natural surface trail maintenance and construction techniques.
  • Strong communication, motivation, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to creating equitable, inclusive, and culturally relevant outdoor learning experiences.
  • Commitment to creating equitable and inclusive environment for all of AMC’s guests, employees, and constituents.
  • Must be capable of safely traveling alone in the backcountry long distances carrying loads in excess of 40 pounds during all seasons and weather conditions. 
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history subject to a driving record check conducted by the AMC.
  • Ability to perform and teach a variety of trail work activities. Ability to operate standard office equipment. 
  • The Appalachian Mountain Club has zero tolerance for child abuse or placing children in danger. The AMC requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons, or the elderly to have a criminal record check performed on their name.
