The scribe works to facilitate patient flow through the Emergency Department and ensure accurate and complete medical records for each patient. Assists providers by accompanying them during the medical history-taking and exam, recording details of both into the electronic health record. Coordinates department resources regarding tests and radiology results.
Education: High School Diploma and one year of college, preferably in the area of Pre-Health Studies.
Qualifications: Must meet all information management, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, and confidentiality and patient rights standards. Must comply with Hospital Employee Health Policy. If a Scribe is not in compliance with this policy, or falls out of compliance, they cannot work as a scribe in the Emergency Department until they are fully compliant. Flexibility in scheduling.
Skills: Working knowledge of medical terminology and accepted abbreviations. Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record exam details. Legible handwriting and ability to accurately record information. Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications. Ability to complete recommended amount of training on the electronic medical records system. Communication skills and the ability to coordinate and cooperate with multiple members of the health care team. Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow. Professional demeanor and recognition of privacy consideration for patients and families. The ability to cope with the sometimes high-pressure environment of the Emergency Department.
Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time. Frequent walking for short distances. Repetitive motion work with keyboards and physical writing.
