Position Overview Apollo is looking to add an Operating Principal with deep operational experience to the HVF team. This person will be a generalist reporting to the Managing Director, HVF portfolio ops. They will be responsible for value creation across the HVF portfolio to include both individual portfolio companies support as well as cross portfolio initiatives. In close collaboration with other members of the team, this individual will contribute to Apollo realizing exceptional returns by leveraging operational best practices and their effect of driving operational insights across all the hybrid value fund’s investments. This individual will serve in a centralized capacity and be a bridge between Apollo’s HVF team and its portfolio company C-Suite. They will be measured on the quantifiable increases in value which Apollo sees across its portfolio and on their demonstrated ability to positively influence the portfolio company leaders. In conjunction with portfolio CEOs and CFOs this individual will work with senior portfolio company management teams to drive the highest priority value creation initiatives and ensure sustainability. Through these initiatives, the successful candidate will work with HVF leadership to help enhance enterprises and shape them into world class, high-performance companies. Primary Responsibilities: Providing actively engaged strategy, operational assessments and leverage (i.e., increase investment productivity) as part of the Apollo deal teams and delivering a consistent approach to active collaborative portfolio management that identifies the key strategic and financial initiatives, as well as management upgrades, required to exceed the base case EBITDA investment plan; Collaborating with the investment team in performing operational due diligence of potential investments, owning the operating improvement commitments, and creating and implementing necessary tools and procedures for continuous improvement and post-investment oversight; Ensuring a fact-based understanding of key operating opportunities & issues (combination of pre & post-closing work) through detailed customer, market, industry, and financial analysis; Monitoring and facilitating the implementation of key initiatives in order to achieve EBITDA targets; Ensuring that the management teams are more successful than they would have been without the support of the individual through coaching, prioritization, Operating Plan development and execution, disseminating best practices & tools, successful use of 3rd party firms, supporting recruiting management talent, etc.; Diagnosing key strategic and financial business issues and operational processes for portfolio companies, and developing comprehensive strategies to prioritize and address those growth, cost-cutting, organizational, financial and operational opportunities; Hands-on partnership and mentorship with senior portfolio company management to execute on specific value creation drivers including go-to-market initiatives, systems and technology improvements, recruiting and hiring of key executives, and M&A integration; Acting as a partner to stimulate focus and commitment with management that is required to advance the portfolio company successfully; Collaborate in shaping the Board agenda on behalf of Apollo and contributing materially to its content; Serve as liaison to other Apollo funds relaying knowledge of best practices. Qualifications & Experience Qualifications: Sustained career progression and stability with solid training at well-run, blue-chip ($1bn ) organizations. Advanced rapidly through general management roles and has run complex P&Ls. 8-12 year’s experience, with experience in strategy consulting and/or prior Private Equity Operational experience. Varied experience versus all in one functional department. Will have rotated between different roles and not stayed in a single silo. Also useful would be demonstrated change management skills and/or material revenue growth experience. He/She will possess a global background, having worked for or with companies of scale that have an international footprint, and with operations that mirror the complexity of those in Apollo’s current portfolio. Apollo’s portfolio is diverse, so the finalist should understand and be fluent on macro industry trends, and preferably have worked across more than one specific industry. Both in publicly traded and privately held settings, the candidate will have created value for shareholders. Ease of access to Apollo’s New York City based office. Happy and willing to travel to the location of any given portfolio company. Given the wide variety of industries that could be represented in the Apollo portfolio at any point in time and the differing needs and urgency levels to each situation, the hire must be ready to identify, engage, and manage the best third party resources to achieve multiple objectives simultaneously. A results-orientation is critical for the HVF Generalist to select and manage third party providers who can help us meet our goal of meaningful EBITDA growth, value creation, and risk mitigation. Cultivating, selecting, and managing this network of third party partners will be important to the long term success of the role. The HVF Generalist will be expected to make positive, effective contributions to the Firm and its culture. These will include: bringing flexibility and energy to his/her work in fast-moving, dynamic, amorphous situations; supporting investment ideation as their capacity/skills allow; and engaging in productive dialogue around investment themes to the extent reasonable. Constant alignment with the Apollo Investment Committee will be the foundation of this element. The successful candidate for the role will also possess the following traits: Operational Skills Capable, and with sufficient expertise, of stepping into most companies, especially troubled companies. Willing to roll up sleeves/get job done with limited resources (not just supervise). Strong ability to read the room with management teams and boards, strong relationship builder, engenders trust with CEO, CFO and other senior members of the portfolio company’s management team. Skilled change agent with an insightful understanding when change is needed, when to advocate for change and how to advocate for change. Able to be highly collaborative with management and other investors. Willing to travel frequently and if needed be deployed to a portfolio company for an extended period. Embraces Apollo’s core values relative to both investment philosophy and cultural condition. Must be a team player with a constructive ego allowing them to inspire confidence and engender trust across the firm. We recognize that the successful candidate is unlikely to have industry experience in all the portfolio company industries; however, we expect that s/he will be able to learn the operations and complexities of these businesses quickly and thoroughly from his/her prior experience in working in multiple industries. This analytical skill must be married with highly developed program management expertise. The candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and influence management skills with the ability to gain the trust and respect of the CEO and CFO, the deal team, and the Board. He/She should have the potential to act as a direct advisor to a CEO/CFO, possess a solid executive network that can be tapped for project work at Apollo, and flourish and influence global companies with revenues in excess of $300 million. EDUCATION Undergraduate study in accounting, finance or economics is a plus. Pay Range 250,000 - 300,000 The base salary range for this position is listed above. This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus based on personal, team, and Firm performance. Compensation ranges are based on several factors including job function, level, and geographic location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed here.
