Job Objective:

Under the direction of the Cardiovascular Services Manager, the Neurodiagnostic Section Supervisor shall provide oversight and direction of activities for the Neurodiagnostic services lab. This includes supervision and direction of activities for the Neurodiagnostic Services Lab personnel utilizing considerable latitude for independent judgment and initiative and responsibly executes administrative assignments. This includes the direct performance of Neurodiagnostic procedures to both inpatient and outpatient that includes the operating room for the adult, pediatric, and neonate population of patients in accordance with technical standards set forth by the American Society of Neurodiagnostic Technologies (ASET), the American Electroencephalography Society (AEEGS), or the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The Neurodiagnostic Section Supervisor is required to maintain and improve his/her level of clinical and technical knowledge across all disciplines of the diagnostic neurosciences.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meets all essential duties of the Neurodiagnostic technologist
  • Promotes client centered care
  • Coordinates staff and patient EEG scheduling for inpatient and outpatient needs
  • Outpatient/Inpatient
    • Prepares patient for study
    • Provides client and family education
    • Promotes family/patient center care environment
    • Works with physicians and medical personnel to ensure optimal study attainment
    • Performs and completes studies in a timely manner
  • Intra-Operative
    • Follows recognized technical guidelines in the performance of quality surgical studies
    • Provides client and family education
    • Participates in surgical monitoring according to established standards and practices

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge requirement includes the performance of studies to include electroencephalography (EEG), polysomnography (PSG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), cortical stimulation mapping (CSM), and intraoperative monitoring (IOM).
  • Knowledge of EEG EP equipment including calibrating, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment and to correct malfunctions as needed.

Skills:

  • Measure patients' body parts and mark locations where electrodes are to be placed.
  • Adjust equipment to optimize viewing of the nervous system.
  • Measure visual, auditory, or somatosensory evoked potentials (EPs) to determine responses to stimuli.
  • Proficiency in identifying artifacts or interferences derived from sources outside of the brain, such as poor electrode contact or patient movement, on electro neurodiagnostic recordings.

Abilities:

  • Monitor patients during tests or surgeries, using electroencephalographs (EEG), evoked potential (EP) instruments, or video recording equipment.
  • Collect and or summarize technical data to assist physicians to diagnose brain, sleep, or nervous system disorders.
  • Conduct tests to determine cerebral death, the absence of brain activity, or the probability of recovery from a coma.
  • Submit reports to physicians summarizing test results.
  • Assist in training technicians or other staff members.
  • Explain testing procedures to patients, answering questions or reassuring patients as needed.
  • Participate in projects, conferences, or technical meetings.

Education and Experience:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and successful completion of an accredited EEG Technologist program.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working as an EEG Tech in a clinical setting is required including intraoperative experience in Spines, Fusions, Craniotomies, Motor mapping of Intraoperative BAER/VER, Pedicle Screw Stim, with EMG Motor Evoked Potential.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Registered Electroencephalographic and/or Evoked Potential Technologist (R.EEG.T and/or R.EP.T.) by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
  • Certification in Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) by the American Board of Registration or Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
  • BCLS Certification.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Mandatory two week call rotation to include weekends and holidays
  • Mandatory 30 minute call back requirement
  • Work often performed in high volume, fast paced, stressful and physical conditions
  • Additional workload during times of unexpected circumstances, high activity, high census, and sudden emergencies
