Job Objective:
Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor and the Laboratory Assistant Director, the Certified Phlebotomist I performs various duties associated with specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing. Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, and answering questions related to specimens and testing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: A. Certified Phlebotomist I
- Collects laboratory specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary sticks on patients
- Assists with the processing of laboratory specimens
- Organizes lab orders by priority and specimen type for proper collection and handling of specimens
- Operates the LIS and HIS as required for the position
- Follows proper isolation techniques
- Safely and effectively uses all necessary equipment
- Cleans laboratory equipment, work surfaces and glassware
- Receives and stocks supplies
- Records temperatures and notifies appropriate Clinical Laboratory Scientist of out-of-range values
- Answers questions regarding test orders, specimen requirements and specimen availability
- Demonstrates proper use of scripting techniques
- Participates in Continuing Education for personal growth and maintenance of certificates and licenses
- Assures completion of all yearly competency testing
- Perform at least 8 draws per hour of average complexity
Non-Essential Duties:
Helps distribute supplies to other departments as needed
Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
Adds support to other laboratory staff as necessary

Experience
Certified Phlebotomist I — six months of related phlebotomy experience preferred
Some experience at an acute care hospital is desirable
Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
Possession of a current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health
