ANNE ARUNDEL HEALTH DEPARTMENT is Hiring a RN -Registered Nurse /SCHOOL HEALTH / Kirwan School Near Glen Burnie, MD

Bureau of School Health and Support, School Health Services, Contractual, 10 1/2 Month Positions

General Statement of Work:

The school nurse (RN) provides appropriate health services at assigned school(s) under the direct supervision of a nurse supervisor. The school nurse provides supervision of licensed practical nurses (LPN), school health certified medication technicians/certified nursing assistants (CMT/CNA), support staff; attends required nurse delegation course; supervision of delegated nursing tasks; maintains evidence of SHS staff trainings and credentials; counseling and resource referral assistance to students, parents and staff; case management of chronic disease; health teaching, home visiting, and participation in mandated screening programs and as a member of regular education and special education teams. The school nurse functions as a liaison between the vendor, AADOH, and BOEAA, the student and his/her family, and the student’s health care provider. Work hours fluctuate and may go beyond regular school hours to comply with student 504 plans and/or IEPs. Based on assignment, other specialized duties may be assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities, but are not limited to:*

1. Providing illness and injury assessment, treatment and prevention,

2. Identifies and assesses health conditions of students by reviewing student education records,

3. Identifying, assessing, planning and providing case management of student health concerns, including completing health appraisals and/or nursing assessments (NA), developing Emergency Action Plans (EAP) and Individualized Care Plans (IHP),

4. Provides Board of Education Anne Arundel (BOEAA) staff trainings for medical emergency interventions,

5. Reviewing student health information,

6. Providing chronic disease management and education,

7. Providing communicable disease surveillance, reporting, and management.

8. Participating as crisis team member,

9. Acting as liaison to assigned school, community, health care providers, students and their families,

10. Identifying the need for home visits and conducts a comprehensive visit,

11. Participating as member of the school teams and assists with the development of IEP/Section 504 plans,

12. Monitoring immunization status including reviewing immunization record, documenting immunizations in student education records, and provides follow up for compliance with COMAR,

13. Providing nursing procedures such as gastrostomy tube feedings, catheterizations, diabetes care, and medication administration,

14. Assisting in the provision of health screenings for vision and hearing,

15. Providing consultation and direct assistance as required to protect the health of school population,

16. Obtaining physician orders for procedures and medications to be given at school,

17. Providing health information and education including required in-service training, to students, school personnel and parents,

18. Providing annual trainings to school personnel on various health topics; including but not to, blood-borne pathogen exposure, diabetes, asthma, and anaphylaxis,

19. Collaborates with students, parents, healthcare providers, and school personnel in the case management of students who have been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury in the school setting,

20. Maintaining current knowledge of health care providers, facilities, agencies and services for purpose of referral to appropriate resources,

21. Fulfilling BOEAA and Anne Arundel Department of Health (AADOH) responsibilities for maintenance of adequate student records, periodic written and statistical reporting and program interpretation as necessary,

22. Providing nursing services at other than assigned schools if required to fulfill programmatic needs,

23. Assisting students with activities of daily living, this may include lifting up to 50 lbs.,

24. Maintaining confidentiality of information, including understanding the minor consent statue, and providing appropriate record management,

25. Collects and submits to AADOH monthly health room statistics and other mandated health information,

26. Attends mandated trainings,

27. Maintaining current Maryland licensure as Registered Nurse,

28. Maintaining current knowledge, skill and competency in school nursing practice,

As per Maryland Code Annotated Education Article §5-203, this school nurse position is based at an eligible Title I school as defined in the law. The following additional school nurse duties are required:

1. Provides full-time nursing coverage for extended learning time and for all school-sponsored events,

2. To enhance the success of all students in the school, provides extensive chronic disease management and education for all students with an identified chronic health conditions,

3. Attends healthcare provider medical appointments with students and their families as needed,

4. Collaborates with the Community School Coordinator in developing a community needs assessment. This assessment shall assess the physical, behavioral, and emotional needs of the students, their families, and their communities,

5. Collaborates with the Community School Coordinator to coordinate wraparound services to meet the medical needs of the students at their assigned school. These services include but are not limited to:

a. Safe transportation;

b. Vision and dental services;

c. Establishing or expanding school-based health center services;

d. Enhancing physical wellness, including providing healthy food for in-school and out-of-school time and linkage to community providers;

e. Enhancing behavioral health services, including access to mental health practitioners ad providing professional development to school staff to provide trauma-informed interventions;

6. Conducts classroom presentation on various health topics;

7. Develops partnerships in the community to provide and support wellness initiatives in the school community; and

8. Collects, maintains, and analyze health data to determine the impact of the community school plan for AADOH, BOEAA, MSDE, and the community.
