Job Description

Works closely with the Division Leadership to develop and lead research programs and initiatives. Assists with strategic initiatives and ensures clinical, translational, and basic science research activities and programs are aligned with key priorities of the Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute (SMCRI) and Lurie Children's Hospital. Assists in the management of the day-to-day operations, personnel, and processes of the Genetics Research Program. Develops and implements systems for ongoing process improvement and program expansion.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Collaborates with leadership and other key stakeholders to develop and implement a strategic vision and goals and objectives for the research program in the Division.

  • Serves as liaison to other Manne Research Institute/Lurie Children's administrative departments (e.g., Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Foundation, Office of Clinical and Community Trials, Institutional Review Board, Accounting, Office of Sponsored Programs, Human Relations, medical divisions/departments, nursing, pharmacy, laboratory etc.).

  • Assists and advises leadership supporting initiatives to maintain and grow clinical research operations, capabilities, and activities, to advance the clinical, translational, and basic research in Genetics enterprise across Lurie Children's Hospital.

  • Leads daily administration of the Genetics Research program operations, focusing on systems supporting daily workflow for research professionals and genetic counselor research staff. Tracks and analyzes key metrics; identifies opportunities for process improvement; and implements QI initiatives in partnership with clinical and research staff.

  • Assists with facilitation and implementation of best financial management practices to assure optimal financial management for the Genetics research program. Partners with research administration financial offices and in medical center finance. Works with department and/or division administrators and research business managers to develop strategies to ensure appropriate accounting of research grants and contracts designated to clinical and translational research.

  • Manages existing research funds, including philanthropic funds and external research funds, associated with the Division's research program. Collaborates with the Office of Sponsored Programs, Lurie Children's Foundation, and Finance in setting up of new grants and ongoing management.

  • Collaborates with the Research Grants Specialist on the development of new grant proposals and provides guidance as needed for pre and post award documents and reports.

  • Collaborates with the Research Administrative Coordinator who facilitates and supports basic science research programs associated with the Division.

  • Establish research training priorities and educational program development.

  • Partners with Residency Director to ensure residents (fellows) are well-supported in their annual research projects. This includes education on how to conduct research and support for research projects.

  • Remains actively engaged in research activities. Provides consultation to leadership investigators and teams on the design, architecture and function on-premises and distributed computerized collaboration tools.

  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

  • The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.

  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelors' degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Five or more years of experience with progressive research administration leadership; experience in clinical research preferred Demonstrated ability to manage simultaneous project plans, personnel, and budgets.

  • Ability to communicate clearly about the CCI activities with both experts and nonexperts.

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills required. High degree of initiative and creativity preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge and skills in EPIC, Redcap, Lawson, Cardio access and other standard research databases. Microsoft computer software applications and database technologies. Mastery of Microsoft Excel and statistical analysis tools is required.

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.

  • Organizational skills: Experience independently planning and managing projects; excellent attention to detail; ability to establish priorities and react promptly to a large variety of requests and needs, sometimes on short notice.

  • Willingness to attend meetings/events evenings and on weekends.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability to analyze issues and formulate and implement action plans.

  • Ability to establish priorities and react promptly to a large variety of requests and needs, sometimes in stressful situations.

  • Must be self-directed, with an in-depth understanding of the organizational goals.

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills. Ability to lead in a collaborative and facilitative style.
