Ann Arbor Art Center is Hiring a Summer Art Camp | Lead Clay Instructor Near Ann Arbor, MI

Status: Seasonal

Schedule: 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday thru Friday 3Hr Lesson Plan Stipend

Duration: June 17 - August 23

Compensation: $16.00/hr

Overview: Clay Camp | Lead Instructor

The A2AC Clay Camp serves children ages 9-12 years old. Each day, campers throw on the pottery wheel in the morning and work on handbuilding projects in the afternoon.

The Lead Clay Instructor will work closely with the Camp Director, Clay Studio Manager, and Assistant Clay Instructor to provide a positive and enriching experience for all campers and a safe, welcoming, organized Clay Camp program.

This position begins on June 17th and ends on August 23rd. Strong preference will be given to applicants who are available to work full-time for the duration of the position. Applicants must be available to work 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday thru Friday. This position is a great opportunity to get a foot in the door. Successful Summer Camp Instructors may be considered for future Camp Seasons, or other classes and events.

Lead Instructor Duties

  • Writes lesson plans and teach lessons to students
  • Supervises and delegate tasks to the Assistant Ceramics Instructor
  • Assists campers with clay projects throughout the day
  • Prepares materials, organize & distribute supplies
  • Manages classroom behavior in such a way as to provide a safe, positive, creative environment for campers to thrive in
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of the studios
  • Assists with camper pick-up
  • Ensures students are in compliance with all Covid-19-related policies and mitigation measures
  • Duties may include walking up and down stairs, standing, bending or leaning over, lifting up to 50 pounds and working on one’s feet most of the day.
  • Includes other duties related to day camp operations, as needed

Required Skills & Experience

  • Prior experience working with children
  • Must have a background in ceramics. Collegiate-level experience is preferred
  • Positive, enthusiastic, works well as part of a team
  • Must be 18 years or older to apply
  • Must be proficient in throwing on the pottery wheel and know how to teach the following
  • hand building techniques: pinch, coil, soft slab, and hard slab construction
