Position: Emergency Vet Assistants at AMH are an essential part of our company. Our Emergency VA’s work closely with our veterinarians and assist them throughout with patient care and cases.

As an Emergency Vet Technician/Assistant you will:

  • Handle emergency situations, remaining calm while showing empathy and compassion.
  • Facilitate communication between clients and the hospital team caring for the pet and direct questions to the appropriate staff.
  • Assist in basic laboratory procedures (i.e. handling blood and urine specimens, using in-house lab analyzers, using the centrifuge, and staining ear and blood films)
  • Setting up, assisting in operating, and cleaning commonly used hospital equipment, oxygen cages, heating devices, and exam rooms.
  • Clean and prepare surgical instrument packs, set up equipment and supplies for surgical procedures, and disinfect surgery suites.
  • Draw blood proficiently and safely.
  • Assist in exam rooms by getting history of the patients as well as basic information including temperature, pulse, respiration rate, weight and lab samples.
  • Operate equipment pertinent to carrying out duties, including but not limited to laboratory equipment, anesthesia, dental, and radiology.
  • Competent animal restraint
  • Ability to read normal vital parameters
  • Abiility to take radiographs is preferred by not required
  • Ability to tactfully communicate with owners in emergency situations

Position Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience: 1-2 years experience preferred
  • Open availability with the possibility of working 1-2 weekend shifts per month
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, active listener, empathetic
  • Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology preferred
  • Ability to learn veterinary software
  • Solution-oriented with high attention to customer service.
  • Ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, boarding, or treatment.
  • Ability to read pet body language and use in controlling/handling individual animal temperament.
  • Respond and quickly react to frequent auditory signals, warnings, or communication from other team members, animals or medical equipment.
