VETERINARY ASSISTANT/TECHNICIAN

Position overview

Animal Care Center is Prattville is hiring a full time veterinary technician or assistant. Licensed techs will be given priority. Must have a minimum of 2 years tech experience in a small animal veterinary hospital. Pay is flexible based on level of licensure and experience. Animal Care Center is a small practice with a focus on excellent customer service and patient care. We have great hours 7:15-5:30 and do not take emergencies after hours. We are closed Wednesday afternoon, and closed all day Saturday & Sundays. Job will include a small amount of rotating kennel work on weekends ( approximately once per month )

QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent

Previous on-the-job training or experience , animal care background desirable

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 18 years old

Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill , or in pain.

Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis

Is well spoken and approaches his/her job duties in a mature nature

Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members

Has excellent client communication skills

Able to commit to learning protocols and procedures even studying these outside of work hours to excel at the job

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires lifting, carrying and restraining animals(will be assisted by other staff member in lifting if animal is over 50 pounds.)walk and stand for extended periods of time: frequently works in a bent position

WORKING CONDITIONS: Will be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, animal feces, urine, blood and vomit. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

DUTIES/TASKS

Can provide compassionate care to patients and clients

Can conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks

Can legibly keep accurate medical records in accordance to hospital policies

Can prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas

Can perform physical assessments: record observations legibly in files or computer

Can effectively restrain pets even when when large and difficult

Knows all common vaccines and vaccination protocols and can explain to clients.

Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of a normal job duty

Maintains positive , cooperative relationships with other employees

Can explain necessary follow ups and home care instructions

Can properly care for all surgical materials and equipment: keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery

Can set up clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heart worm test, skin scrapings, ear cytology, urinalysis and etc...

Can effectively position and take radiographs under the direction of a DVM

Can admit patients following hospital policy and doctors written orders

Can discharge patients based on the veterinarians orders , ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state

Is responsible for medical boarding animals, including walking, feeding, and administering medications. This includes weekends and holiday shifts

Maintains the cleanliness of the hospital each day

Understands and carries out the weekly and monthly chore list to maintain the hospital cleanliness , the equipment, and overall appearance of the hospital

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $12.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 – 40 per week
