    Job Summary
    The Teacher Expert Advanced Mentorship/Internship oversees aspects of the Anchorage School District’s current Advanced/Gifted Mentorship program, catering to qualified juniors and seniors seeking practical experience in their areas of interest. This role additionally facilitates the growth of mentorship/internship opportunities in the Academies of Anchorage transformation. This role entails recruiting students, securing mentors from the community, and managing the rigorous mentorship/internship course. The role engages in extensive community outreach to secure mentors aligned with student interests. The teacher expert is based at the ASD Education Center but requires travel within Anchorage to schools and business locations. This position has a flexible schedule based on student and mentor requirements.
    This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
    Job Requirements
    The following are required:
    • A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
    • Demonstrated expertise in gifted education, mentorship, experiential learning programs, or a related field.
    • Evidence of leadership and organizational skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
    • Ability to adapt instructional methods to diverse student needs.
    Essential Job Functions
    • Develops and maintains program materials, including student application forms and mentor/intern handbooks.
    • Conducts universal data screenings and visits to ASD high schools to recruit eligible students for mentorship and internship opportunities.
    • Conducts orientation sessions for qualifying students and facilitates individual placement and site-based supervisor coordination.
    • Engages in extensive community outreach to secure mentors aligned with student interests.
    • Conducts regular visits to high schools to support site-supervisors and troubleshoot issues.
    • Responds to inquiries about the program from various stakeholders.
    • Fosters and builds relationships among students, parents, mentors, and program administration.
    • Demonstrates leadership skills and qualities and maintains a professional demeanor in dress and speech, especially when engaging with business leaders professionals, and families.
    • Provides professional development opportunities to colleagues in various formats, while exhibiting interpersonal problem-solving, and organizational skills.
    • Possesses experience coaching/mentoring scenarios, and excellent communication skills.
    • Identifies and addresses any mentor-student relationship issues as they arise.
    • Assists in resolving complex obstacles to success of overall experiential learning opportunities.
    • Seeks fundraising opportunities, such as obtaining grants, to support the program.
    • Responsible for conducting site visits with new business internship partners, ensuring compliance with placement legality paperwork requirements.
    • Maintain mentorship/internship curriculum templates and instructional resources.
    • Plans and executes a year-end reception to recognize student achievements and thank mentors.
    • Performs other duties as required by program, student, and mentor needs.
    Physical /Mental Demands
    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

    Work Environment
    Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.
    While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
