This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion. Summary Of DutiesThe Mechanical Engineer provides technical support to the maintenance and modification of Amtrak’s Passenger Car Equipment. The Mechanical Engineer works with the Senior Manager Equipment Engineering to ensure all passenger cars are in compliance with all federal regulations. The Mechanical Engineer leads the development and execution of engineering programs and processes to improve the quality and reliability of the equipment.
Essential Functions
  • Leads and manages projects and analysis by utilizing available resources and team support to develop specifications and technical procedures for passenger rail equipment systems to ensure reliable, safe and functional operations.
  • Provides design improvements related to equipment problems which are typically design flaws, retrofit and field modifications, and maintenance shortcomings.
  • Participates in field tests, safety inspections, and warranty programs for rolling stock programs.
  • Resolves field mechanical problems with existing and new equipment including the Venture, Superliner, Horizon fleets.
  • Serves as Amtrak Rolling Stock Engineering liaison working with internal and external departments such as the FRA, State DOTs, NTSB, and APTA.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or other engineering discipline or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Solidworks, or comparable 2D/3D CAD software
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing shop and/or outside environment
  • Project management and analysis skills
MIMINUM KSA (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities)
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings.
  • Must have general knowledge of ASME standards
  • Ability to independently resolve technical problems and be proficient in technical correspondence.
  • Capable of effectively working with office professionals and craft personnel
  • Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft computer software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Projects.
  • Capable of developing and implementing procedures, modifications, and specifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3 or more years of experience preferred
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in Amtrak or Class 1 railway rolling stock maintenance in technical roles involving inspections, commissioning new rolling stock, troubleshooting, and turnaround servicing. The experience should include equipment maintenance, sanitary systems, power doors, and HVAC, or equivalent experience in another industry.
  • Professional Engineering license
  • Knowledgeable in areas of North American railway safety and regulatory practices including but not limited to AAR, FDA, FRA and Transport Canadian rules.
Work Environment
  • Travel up to 25%
  • Will require interface and work in a shop environment both inside and outside
  • Will frequently be working on ladders, with moving vehicles, and with machinery.
  • Typically bends, stoops and crouches on a regular basis to diagnose
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
Communications And Interpersonal SkillsMust have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The salary/hourly range is $86,500 - $111,996 for the Mechanical Engineer position and $103,700 - $134,460 for the Sr. Mechanical Engineer position. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
