Ames CSD is seeking a Director of Teaching and Learning for the 2024-2025 school year.
Work Schedule: 255 day contract
Summary
Assists the Superintendent in the administration of the School District by overseeing, aligning, and leading the selection and implementation process for PK, elementary, and secondary schools, curriculum. This position also co-facilitates the MTSS delivery system. Oversees the implementation and training of instructional practices, instructional framework, and management of the teacher leadership model. Serves as a member of the Superintendent’s cabinet guiding the overall direction of the District. Promotes the District’s purpose of developing and maintaining processes and procedures aligned to the District’s priorities to accomplish the outcomes of the strategic plan.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Directs the planning, development, implementation, and review of all District instructional programs and curriculum adoptions by working cooperatively with administrators of PK, Elementary, and Secondary to provide an appropriate, rigorous, and relevant education for all District students.
  • Co-facilitates the District Teaching and Learning Committee.
  • Provides leadership and commits to the District’s efforts to eliminate student achievement and opportunity gaps. Identifies opportunities for dismantling oppressive practices and makes immediate changes.
  • Focuses on closing the achievement and opportunity gaps for traditionally underserved students, ensuring equity in secondary services, and cultivating diversity in leadership positions.
  • Promotes the systemic implementation of progressive educational practices, such as social/emotional learning, inquiry-based instruction, and PBIS.
  • Assists with oversight and facilitation of objections to instructional materials processes.
  • Oversees and manages research requests that come to the district.
  • Oversees the mentorship program for new teachers.
  • Oversees the creation and implementation of the Individual Career and Academic Plan.
  • Oversees the training and implementation of a district instructional framework.
  • Oversees the Teacher Leadership and Compensation grant including visioning, budgeting, training, implementation, and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Collaborates with outside agencies and community partners as designated by the Superintendent and serves as the District’s representative at functions and on committees or task forces.
  • Manages the Curriculum and Instruction department, overseeing tasks such as determining suitable service and staffing levels, allocating resources effectively, evaluating work methods and procedures, and guiding instructional coaches and mentors. Collaborates with principals on staff professional development to enhance instructional quality and address any challenges that arise
  • Responsible for the selection, supervision, and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Develops and administers the department’s annual operating budget and oversees the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Oversees the development, preparation, and submission of reports required by law or requested by federal, state and local governmental bodies.
  • Gathers information as needed from the Superintendent, board members, District staff, the public, and other sources to prepare reports and recommendations to the Board.
  • Participates in District-wide decision-making activities and works directly with the Superintendent to identify issues and practices that affect the future of the District.
  • Interprets and enforces District policy as it relates to schools, instruction, and student services.
  • Oversees the distribution of resources to schools through the identification of needs and establishment of priorities.
  • Oversees grant writing management and administration to obtain funding for enhanced instructional programs.
  • Attends school board meetings, board retreats, and training as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Assists with school-community relations. Speaks to staff, parents, and student-based school groups and participates in community listen and learns.
  • Leads Equity Board Committee in collaboration with the Equity Coordinator.
  • Develops the district Comprehensive Assessment Plan (CAP) and oversees district testing.
  • Oversight of the Teacher Quality committee, including TQ budget and district led TQ opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field and a valid Iowa Administrative License and Iowa Evaluator's license (or the ability to immediately obtain a license by the date of hire).
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in teaching and working with adults and adolescents.
  • Have at least three (3) years of leadership experience, preferrably in a non-classroom based role such as an instructional coach, principal, associate principal, or central office administrator.
The successful candidate will exhibit:
  • Ability to lead the implementation of educational equity work
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of educational policy and management.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of staff and organizational development.
  • Knowledge of pertinent State law and District policy as it relates to schools.
  • Knowledge of current research in school improvement planning.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations.
  • Ability to develop and administer department goals, objectives and procedures.
  • Ability to research, analyze and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders including District administrators, staff, various private and public agencies and organizations, the public and other interested groups.
  • Ability to create a sense of belonging and welcoming environment for students and staff.
  • Consistent and punctual basis work attendance.
