Reading Buddies is a summer reading program dedicated to empowering rising 1st-5th graders to achieve outstanding comprehension skills. This is acheived through personalized, in-person sessions with dedicated AmeriCorps Reading Buddies, where students engage in a daily 30-minute session every Monday through Thursday at their designated sites throughout Wilmington, DE, Middletown, and lower Delaware. Our program places a strong emphasis on active learning, with students and reading Buddies delving into the world of literature with real books in hand. Together, they explore essential literacy components, including phonics, vocabulary, fluency, phomenic awareness, multi-cultural literacy and comprehension skills. Each week, participants dive into exciting 'camp themes, ranging from Sports, Music, Under the Sea, and beyond fostering a stimulating and immersive learning environment. SummerCollab's dedicated Literacy Coaches provide comprehensive on-site support, ensuring that AmeriCorp members have access to necessary materials and adhere to structured schedules. To measure the progress of each reader in our program, Reading Buddies conduct a computer based Pre and Post Reading Assessments during the first week and last week of programming. These assesments serve as an invaluable tool in tracking individual reading growth and program effectiveness.
