Position Overview:
WSU Center for Urban Studies is seeking AmeriCorps members to provide operational support for
the AmeriCorps Urban Safety (AMUS) Program – Get Ahead of Lead Program.
AMUS aims to address public health on behalf of the Michigan Department of Health and Human
Service (MDHHS) with the Community Lead Water Filter Installation and Maintenance Program.
Member distributes new filters and offers replacement cartridges to households that have previously
received a filter. Assisting with installing the water filters or demonstrating the correct usage to
residents is offered, as well as information and training on lead-reducing water filters.
POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES
Members will specifically serve in communities where the amount of lead in drinking water
is higher than the state’s limit. AMUS serves in these areas to educate residents about the
dangers of lead and how to reduce their exposure.
Members survey residents via phone for complete preassessment survey.
Members may deliver filter items directly to residents, so access to a personal vehicle is
preferred.
Develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures for project-specific reporting.
Represent AMUS at local AMUS events, community gatherings, workshops, and trainings (must
be available nights and weekends).
Member activities will include community organizing, event coordination and the use of
surveys, leafleting, community meetings and social media to gather data, communicate
vital information, and implement response strategies.
Skills and Qualifications
Working toward a high school diploma.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others.
Strong problem resolution, organizational, analytical, and communication (oral and written)
skills; ability to collaborate effectively.
Strong diplomatic skills to present, answer questions and concerns effectively to groups.
