POSITION REPORTS TO: Houston and Baton Rouge Site Director

POSITION SUPERVISES: AmeriCorps Crew Leaders and Crew Members

CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Full-time, Non-Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Field Training and Development Supervisor’s purpose is to provide direct supervision, training, development, and logistical support to AmeriCorps crew members and leaders to ensure members receive consistent, effective, and equitable applied learning opportunities while successfully implementing a diverse array of conservation, disaster response, and community engagement projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

Under direct supervision from the Field Training and Development Manager, Supervisor will perform the following functions:

  1. Train and supervise AmeriCorps members;
    1. Assist in the implementation of Crew Leader and Crew Member orientations;
    2. Conduct ongoing training for AmeriCorps members throughout their term, both on project sites and at the program’s office location.
    3. Train and lead AmeriCorps members in conservation, disaster response activities, and risk management and safety standards;
    4. Become certified instructor and maintain instructor certification to train and certify AmeriCorps members in Adult CPR/AED First Aid and Wilderness Remote First Aid
    5. Cultivate a positive member experience through one-on-one support, team-building, and leadership development;
    6. Support positive mental and emotional health of members; through one-on-one and group check-ins, providing resource referral and programmatic accommodations and adaptations;
    7. Handle conflict management and enforce disciplinary measures as necessary with Crew Leaders and Crew Members in accordance with program policies and procedures;
    8. Conduct required performance evaluations of AmeriCorps members;
    9. Transport members using AYW vehicles, as needed by program guidelines;
    10. Promote a culture of inclusion, equity, and diversity throughout recruitment and member management practices.
  2. Manage project implementation according to AYW standards and project partners;
    1. Coordinate project logistic as it pertains to;
      1. preparing project scopes
      2. ensuring all necessary tools and equipment are available in good working order
      3. communicating with the project partner prior to crew arrival and throughout the project
      4. collecting project partner surveys from project partners
    2. Maintain active professional communication with the Site Coordinator, Manager, and project partners to effectively implement project, timelines, and goals;
    3. Conduct frequent site visits, including occasionally overnight during hitch/camping projects, to ensure members are effectively implementing their training to accomplish project and member development goals and provide ongoing educational support;
    4. Purchase and maintain field equipment such as power tools, chainsaws, brush cutters, etc., and document expenses according to required policies and procedures;
      1. Conduct regular tool inventory and maintenance checks to ensure adequate appropriate tools are available and in good, safe working order for upcoming projects and training sessions.
      2. Manage vendor accounts, order equipment, as needed, in consultation with manager, and submit invoices and receipts in an accurate, timely fashion;
      3. Train and enforce maintenance protocols with members and leaders;
    5. Notify the Site Coordinator of other operational supplies needed for members (i.e. camping, first aid, PPE, clothing, etc.) and maintain accurate inventory records per site inventory management procedures
  3. Ensure crew-related project paperwork and documentation are completed and submitted to the Site Coordinator in a timely and accurate manner;
    1. training members on proper documentation policies, procedures, and understanding of project metrics
    2. conducting weekly reviews of submitted documentation and metrics to ensure crew members are completing as directed and following up, as needed, to correct and clarify any issues
    3. submit reviewed documentation to the Site Coordinator for final submission to relevant AYW staff and online databases
  4. Provide input to the Manager and other AYW staff to identify relevant and necessary technical and professional development needs and continuing education opportunities and attend trainings virtually and in person, as needed;
  5. Lead Interviewing and selection of potential AmeriCorps members in collaboration with the Recruitment & Outreach Coordinator and Houston site staff;
  6. Assist and support disaster deployments on the ground for up to 2-4 weeks, as needed, in coordination with the Manager and other agency and partner staff;
  7. Leading activities and ensuring safety on volunteer projects in coordination with internal staff and public and private entities;
  8. Attend internal and external meetings virtual and in person, as needed and required;
  9. Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Required

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION: Bachelor’s degree environmental studies or related field, or similar activities in AmeriCorps or national service;

EXPERIENCE: Two years of previous related experience in conservation and restoration programs; prior experience leading and teaching a team or supervising. Familiarity with AmeriCorps or public service, and reporting measurements, working with contracts, audit requests, compliance, and member coordination. Experience working with young adults and academically and socially at-risk opportunity youth, ages 18-26, with a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, cultural and spiritual practices;

EQUIVALENT EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED and completion of a 2-year vocational program related to the specified field of study and 2 years of the specified work experience or Associate’s degree in the specified or field of study and 2-years of the specified experience.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE: Microsoft Office applications, i.e. Word; Excel; Access; Google docs and Sheets; Trail building and habitat restoration experience; Mechanical and basic tool knowledge, including use of a chainsaw; CPR/Wilderness First Aid; Herbicide use; Team-based coordination and logistics;

SKILLS: Lead teams and develop leaders; good problem solving and logistical skills; conflict resolution skills; basic computer skills; operate passenger van, truck with trailer and other heavy equipment; chainsaw operation; GPS/GIS; carpentry; small engine maintenance; project management; project partner relations. Operate in diverse community settings; able to provide mentorship under stressful conditions; conservation and trail building; building and maintenance of park infrastructure; habitat restoration; invasive species removal; wildfire mitigation; disaster response; safe tool use;

ABILITIES: Attention to detail and accuracy; well-organized; cooperative, patient and willing to assist others; open and honest personality; flexible under pressure; good decision maker; able to build consensus; flexible problem-solving in the field; presents a positive role model for Corps members that supports respect for the learner, for diversity, and for the mission of AYW.

WORKING MODEL AND CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT: In-Person

INDOORS: Environmentally controlled conditions, working in an office or shared office setting, working with others in a group or team; contact with others (face-to-face, by telephone, or otherwise), No hazardous conditions. 

OUTDOORS: Independent, isolated settings, may be required to work in hot, wet, cold, or other significantly unpleasant conditions, including active and non-active disaster work zones and areas;

ATTENDANCE: Monday – Friday, flexible 40 hour workweek; 1 hour unpaid lunch break; and off-site Disaster and Conservation Hitches. 

TRAVEL: Travel for partner cultivation and project planning purposes;

Occasionally: Attendance may be needed for some weekends to meet deadlines/special projects, overtime must be pre-approved and travel to AmeriCorps service sites and transport corps members as needed; also for professional conferences, workshops, training, and, or annual staff retreat.
