Learn more about American University Department: School of Education Time Type: Job Description: The School of Education at American University invites applications for a full-time (non-tenure track) faculty position of Director of Clinical Faculty, supporting our partnership with the City Teachers Alliance (CTA) program at the Philadelphia site. Through the partnership with City Teachers Alliance, American University’s School of Education offers a two-year Master of Arts in Teaching degree that is integrated as one component of CTA’s four-year teacher preparation program that results in the AU MAT degree as well as dual certification in a content area and special education. The mission of City Teachers Alliance is to prepare highly effective teachers who significantly accelerate student achievement in the nation’s highest-need schools by recruiting outstanding candidates, equipping them with state-of-the-art and research-based pedagogy and professional development, and linking their certification to their demonstration of effective teaching practices and skills. The appointment is for a twelve-month faculty position that will commence on March 1st, 2024, with potential for subsequent annual reappointment. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. This position includes responsibilities of a Term faculty member with release from teaching for administrative responsibilities. The position will be based in the Philadelphia area to support the administration of CTA faculty at the Philadelphia site. Roles and Responsibilities: The Director of Clinical Faculty (DCF) collaborates closely with the City Teachers Alliance Executive Director (ED) to coordinate the implementation of the joint program. The DCF manages, coordinates, and evaluates the work of the site-based Lead Clinical Faculty (LCF) and Clinical Faculty in all content areas and grade levels and is responsible for the hiring, onboarding, and evaluation of all faculty at the site. The DCF supports the LCF team in enacting their roles as the primary subject area supports for clinical faculty and as liaisons to City Teachers Alliance content area directors. The DCF has oversight of all aspects of the academic program (inclusive of coursework and coaching) at the site, providing program quality control. The DCF serves as the first line of advising for students in the program, including providing information about registration, conducting grade reviews, and referring coursework issues to appropriate staff. The DCF also serves as the liaison between the site-based Clinical Faculty and the various teams from the City Teachers Alliance central organization, especially the Curriculum and Professional Development team. Specific responsibilities include: Meeting regularly with the CTA ED to ensure program quality for site. Collaborating with site executive team to build coursework schedule. While CTA has primary responsibility for providing a site for coursework each year, the DCF creates the course schedule, ensures that all courses are staffed, and communicates course placements to participants. Meeting regularly with LCF team to coordinate all aspects of coursework and coaching, including:Coursework Staffing Scheduling Monitoring curriculum implementationCoaching Assigning coaches Norming (e.g., inter-rater reliability) of coaches Development of coaching practice Acting as the curriculum and professional development lead at site: Working with LCF to ensure that coursework is delivered with fidelity. Analyzing data to determine site-specific professional development needs and planning and delivering PD for the faculty. Working closely with City Teachers Alliance’ national Curriculum and Professional Development team: Coordinating feedback from students and faculty regarding curriculum and coaching Participating in the planning and delivery of program-wide professional development Regularly monitoring program participant performance data and referring issues to the LCF and site teams. Participating in site and national meetings and professional development. Represent the voice of faculty with AU, CTA, and school partners so that the impact of decisions on the faculty can be considered. The Director of Clinical Faculty works closely with both the CTA site executive team and the AU Program Liaison. The DCF reports to the AU Program Liaison. Position hours are full-time and require some evening and weekend work. Required Qualifications: This person has a demonstrated record of continuous, and courageous, commitment to anti-racism in urban education. They will also have a graduate degree (M.A. or higher) related to education; experience in PK-12 urban public education as a teacher, staff developer, and/or administrator; skills as both a communicator and a manager; strength in developing highly-organized systems; experience in group facilitation and mentoring; experience with internship programs; ability to work as a member of a high-functioning team; experience with online learning management systems such as Canvas; supervision experience.
