American Society for Cell Biology is Hiring a Director of Professional Development Near Rockville, MD

Position Summary:

The ASCB is seeking a passionate and dynamic individual to fill the role of Director of Professional Development. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the design, development, and implementation of inclusive educational and professional development programs that support a diverse member community throughout their careers and aim to increase participation of those underrepresented in the sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • · Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for professional development offerings in alignment with ASCB’s goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with volunteer subject matter experts on educational programs, webinars, workshops, training sessions, and mentoring opportunities that enhance member engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with Membership and Marketing Departments to understand the professional development needs of the community, deliver effective messaging, ensure success of anticipated programs and drive engagement.
  • Tap into a broad array of funding sources to support departmental goals, from registration-based models to sponsorship or private and federal grant funding, working collaboratively with the Finance Department on compliance and oversight of grant funds.
  • Identify emerging trends and best practices in education and professional development within the scientific field to enhance the relevance and impact of programs.
  • Manage the budget for professional development activities, ensuring financial sustainability and efficient use of ASCB resources, including management of staff time and effort on externally funded projects.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs through data analysis and feedback mechanisms, making adjustments as necessary to improve outcomes, and ensuring compliance with all evaluation and reporting requirements for externally funded projects.
  • Foster partnerships with educational institutions, industry organizations, funding agencies, and other stakeholders to enhance the reach and impact of ASCB’s professional development initiatives.
  • Supervise a team of professional development staff, providing leadership and mentorship to ensure their success and growth.
  • Serve as a liaison to ASCB committees.

Experience:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a Master's degree or higher is preferred.
  • Seven to ten years of experience in professional development, scientific education, or a related field, preferably within a scientific society or association.
  • Experience in budget development and financial management, including use of software like Intacct, with understanding of grant budgeting and federal funder compliance required.
  • Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with learning management systems and online learning.
  • Experience in event planning logistics, including vendor management, contracting, and on-site support.

  • Able to work across multiple digital platforms and adaptable to new technology and systems.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies.
  • Familiarity with current trends and technologies in education and professional development.
  • Willingness to travel to attend meetings and conferences.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing hybrid teams and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Position Requirements:

Travel up to 20% of the time, including weekends.

This position is currently hybrid; reporting to the office once a week.
