American Public Health Association is Hiring a Strategic Communications Internship: 2024 Fall term (September 1 - December 15) Near Washington, DC

Overview

Gain hands-on experience in communications, marketing and public relations with APHA’s strategic communications internship. Supporting the Association’s active Strategic Communications department, interns have the opportunity to advance APHA’s mission of building public health capacity and promoting effective policy and practice. The department focuses on increasing awareness of APHA’s leadership role in public health, supporting the public health profession and expanding engagement with APHA. This is an US-based internship and candidates must be able to work in the US during the internship. APHA internships are unpaid and located in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

Strategic Communications interns support ongoing communications efforts by assisting with media relations, marketing campaigns, web content strategy and overall communications strategy, including: - Creating and editing website content and checking websites for quality assurance - Tracking and analyzing website performance through Google Analytics - Drafting and producing mass emails and newsletters - Contributing to planning and coordination of integrated marketing campaigns for events, membership, publications, advocacy, development, etc. - Planning and producing content for social media - Drafting press releases and assisting with media outreach - Helping to ensure all communications products meet accessibility guidelines Work also includes communications support for APHA’s Annual Meeting and Expo, Policy Action Institute, National Public Health Week and the Get Ready campaign. Interns may have the opportunity to write for Public Health Newswire or The Nation’s Health.

Qualifications

APHA’s Strategic Communications Department offers one internship per semester for undergraduate or graduate students. Candidates should have: - An interest in association/nonprofit/public health communications - Strong writing skills - Ability to work independently and with a team - Attention to detail - Willingness to learn Prior experience with strategic communications, digital marketing, website editing, public relations and/or social media is a plus. Opportunities for internships are available year-round and last for a three- to four-month period. To assure that the intern maximizes her or his experience, we require that students work at least 20 hours a week. Start and end times are negotiable. Applicants who meet the requirements and are interested in being considered for an internship position should upload the following information: - Cover letter, indicating your specific area(s) of interest and expertise, what you hope to gain from an APHA internship, why you would like to intern with our department and your availability and schedule. - Resume - Unofficial transcript - Two writing samples, 1-2 pages each (published, from a website or from schoolwork - List of two references (from two individuals who know you well enough to discuss your qualifications, e.g., an employer or professor) This is a U.S.-based internship and candidates must be able to work in the U.S. during the internship.
