JOB PURPOSE: The Senior Director of Philanthropy is a termed position to direct and manage American Prairie's Forever Wild comprehensive campaign, a nine-figure, multi-year fundraising effort continuing through 2027. The Senior Director of Philanthropy will be a senior member of the organization to oversee campaign strategy in consultation with the organization's National Board of Directors and Executive team.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
70% Campaign Lead
  • Oversee, direct, and execute campaign strategy for American Prairie's Forever Wild comprehensive campaign, pursuing annual organizational fundraising goals of at least $25 million in new commitments.
  • Recruit, assemble, and direct the Forever Wild Campaign Committee, comprised of diverse, engaged, and capable philanthropic volunteers, including American Prairie board directors and emeritus directors, donors, and friends to develop and execute campaign communications, events, philanthropic asks, and peer-to-peer network growth of prospective individual donors and corporate and foundation institutional partners.
  • Lead the organization's staff Campaign Department Leadership Team (CDLT) through weekly/monthly meetings, cross-team alignment and execution of campaign strategies and activities, and oversee ongoing campaign progress communications to the entire American Prairie team.
  • Serve as a strategy partner for Philanthropy, Marketing, and Finance staff for campaign execution.
  • Utilize and advise the organization's events team, including the Ken Burns American Heritage Prize as a key strategy to expand and leverage peer-to-peer fundraising, advancing one of the campaign's primary goals, which is to expand the organization's donor base at the mid ($10K commitments), major ($50K commitments), and principal ($1M commitments) giving levels.
  • Work with outside campaign consultants for strategic guidance and partnership, to be determined.
  • Working closely with the VP of Philanthropy and the Philanthropy Operations teams, oversee, direct, and manage campaign systems, including annotated table of gifts, forecasting, key performance metrics, and prospect research.
  • Serves as a strategic partner for Philanthropy team members for donor strategy, donor visits, and gift solicitations.
30% Team Management
  • Supervise the Philanthropy Managers, currently three staff, who are responsible for portfolios of mid-level, major, and principal giving prospects, and are the organization's individual fundraisers in addition to the executive team.
  • Manage individual and team fundraising performance, including oversight of individual and team metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs); and mentorship and direction for donor strategies and solicitations.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Minimum 10 years of philanthropic experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • 5 years of experience in a team leadership or executive position.
  • Track record of success as a major gift fundraiser with the demonstrated ability to attract, cultivate, solicit, and secure gifts.
  • Experience working with a major philanthropic community or network and driving success through a sophisticated philanthropic campaign.
  • Experience engaging and managing a Board of Directors and volunteer philanthropy leaders.
  • Comprehensive program management skills and experience, including short- and long-term planning and evaluation, philanthropy ethics, cultivation practices, and development and maintenance of systems and processes.
  • Skilled in effective teamwork; ability to drive alignment and productive collaboration.
  • Accustomed to being held accountable for ambitious bottom-line results.
  • Strategic relationship management experience.
  • Highly engaging and approachable with savvy interpersonal skills; diplomatic, ambassadorial, and authentic.
  • Highly skilled and experienced in polished and persuasive written and oral communication.
  • Entrepreneurial and creative; driven to innovate and improve.
  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of American Prairie's mission, values, goals, and culture.
  • Moderate travel, up to 5-10 nights per month, and ability to attend evening and weekend events.
  • Proficient with current technology devices and software including databases and cloud-based software.
  • Valid Driver's license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Knowledge, understanding and familiarity with conservation missions and organizations.
