As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you'll play a crucial role in our operations, moving and handling materials with precision and efficiency. General Purpose:

A Heavy Equipment Operator at American Iron & Metal is responsible for operating heavy equipment to move, position, and reposition material while ensuring that the load is safely attached to the equipment.

Essential Duties:

  • Operate grapple, shear, forklift, and skid steer loader.
  • Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities to prevent overload.
  • Move levers, depress foot pedals, and turn dials to operate equipment for lifting, moving, and placing loads.
  • Inspect cables and grappling devices for wear, reporting all issues and malfunctions to management.
  • Inspect equipment before and after use to ensure proper function.
  • Load and unload material, moving it to the designated area.
  • Follow all safety procedures while operating equipment.
  • Perform regular maintenance and minor repairs when necessary.
  • Report all equipment issues and malfunctions.
  • Inspect equipment for safety issues daily.
  • Determine if any parts are malfunctioning.
  • Lift, position, and place machinery, equipment, or other large objects at yard sites and facilities.
  • Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy.
  • Follow directions carefully.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma.
  • At least 3 years of training under an experienced Crane Operator.

Language Skills:

  • Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Write correspondence, memos, and schedules.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to guests, clients, and fellow staff.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Basic math skills required.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Problem-solving, reasoning, and thinking creatively.
  • Apply common sense understanding to better serve guests' needs.

Physical Demands:

  • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Occasional periods of walking and standing.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • Consistently climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crawls, or crouches.
  • Consistently turning and moving of hands, arms, feet, and legs.

Vision Requirements:

  • Regularly use close, distance, color, and peripheral vision as well as depth perception.
  • Ability to adjust focus.

Environment/Noise:

  • Work is performed indoors or outside in all types of weather.
  • Exposed to noise, vibration, dust, oil, dirt, and fumes.

Certificates/Licenses (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Crane Certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Job Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Preferences:

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to successfully complete assignments or tasks with little supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with coworkers to accomplish work goals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Basic computer operation skills.

Starting Pay:

  • $20 per hour

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
