Mid-Level Environmental Specialist

American Engineers Group, LLC (AEG) is currently seeking an Environmental Specialist to join its team at its Mechanicsburg office. A self-motivated individual with strong leadership skills is needed. He or she should have experience with projects for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC).

The selected candidate will be tasked with conducting a range of environmental and engineering-related endeavors associated with transportation, dam and water resources, and private development projects. Tasks may include conducting wetland identification and delineations, hazardous waste investigations, obtaining environmental permits from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), etc., monitoring environmental permit compliance, developing and negotiating mitigation strategies, threatened and endangered species coordination, erosion and sedimentation control plans, stormwater management, avoidance and minimization measures, impact assessments, and regulatory/governmental agency coordination.

Education and Experience:

  • BS (MS a plus) in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Wildlife or Fisheries, Physical Science, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, or another related field.
  • 5-15 years of experience with the duties described below.
  • Dependable drive and character as demonstrated with a stable work history.
  • 40-Hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) HAZWOPER Training (or willingness to complete training upon hire)
  • Asbestos and Lead Abatement Certification (or willingness to complete training upon hire)
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.

Desired Skills:

  • Ecological or biological experience in various fields of study including: applicable federal and state regulations associated with earth disturbance, wetlands and watercourses, threatened and endangered species, historic resources, and general engineering principles.
  • Experience with environmental compliance and documentation under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), for transportation-related projects.
  • Documented working experience conducting wetland delineations and Phase I Bog Turtle surveys.
  • Experience completing Phase I and Phase II/III ESAs for PennDOT projects in addition to field sampling plans and health and safety plans; OSHA 40-hour certification, asbestos inspector certification, and lead-based paint inspector certification is a plus.
  • Experience with the preparation of permit applications, PennDOT CEE, KEES System, and regulatory coordination for various projects.
  • Experience working in a professional environment that demands exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced working environment, which includes multitasking across multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Superior communication skills, including the capacity to make oral and written presentations; the ability to interface with a diverse range of clients, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Additional experience in any of the following areas is desirable: air and noise evaluation; erosion and sedimentation control; stormwater management; watershed science/planning; and wetland/stream restoration practices.
  • Project management and budgeting/cost control experience a plus.

Duties and Capabilities of the Environmental Specialist Include:

  • Prepare technical reports and communicate the results to individuals in industry, government, and/or the general public.
  • Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relationships with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies and/or to develop information and interpret findings.
  • Balancing time in the office with field work.
  • Coordinating various projects with Project Engineers and Administrative Personnel in the Phoenixville and Mechanicsburg offices.
  • Possess computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Project Management Software, and Internet (web-based applications). Experience with GIS and/or CADD a plus.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Must be willing to occasionally travel to client work sites.
  • Fieldwork may occur in a variety of weather conditions, traversing uneven or steep terrain and related elements, as needed.
  • The assignments may require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, carry equipment, work within wetland and stream areas, maneuver around obstacles, work in the presence of traffic, and ascend/descend ladders.
  • Location of Position: Mechanicsburg Office.
