Founded in 1965, the ACLU of North Carolina (ACLU-NC), an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that stands as the state’s guardian of liberty – working in courts, the General Assembly, and communities to protect and advance civil rights and civil liberties for all North Carolinians. The ACLU-NC brings together litigation, legislative advocacy, communications, and organizing strategies to empower communities and achieve our objectives in major issue areas including criminal law reform, racial justice, LGBTQIA equality, reproductive freedom, and the rights of immigrants. With nearly 30,000 members and supporters across the state, the ACLU-NC has a staff of over 20 people with an office in Raleigh.The OpportunityThe ACLU-NC Communications team is seeking one full-time Communications Intern to join our team beginning June 1st through July 31st, 2024. The Communications Intern will work on multi-media communications and public relations projects addressing a wide variety of civil rights issues. The Communications Intern will learn about the responsibilities and daily work of a nonprofit communications department and familiarize themselves with social justice advocacy. Working under the guidance of the Senior Communications Strategist, the Communications Intern will be fully engaged as a member of the Communications team in a hybrid working environment. The Communications Intern will be expected to work Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, in accordance with our office operating hours. The ACLU-NC is open to partnering with higher education institutions to secure academic credit and/or funding for the ideal candidate. Work demands may require travel, and occasional evenings and weekends. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Track current events pertinent to the organization’s mission
  • Track media coverage of ACLU issues and initiatives
  • Draft social media content
  • Update the ACLU of North Carolina’s website
  • Produce public education materials by conducting research, drafting outlines, building lists, and supporting the distribution of materials
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

To Be Successful in This Role, the Candidate Will Have

  • Commitment to Mission: Demonstrated commitment to and a strong understanding of civil rights, civil liberties, social justice, and the ACLU-NC’s mission, goals, and programs.

  • Research and Writing: Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Communication: Proficient-level ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with staff, volunteers, and the general public. Skilled in communicating both orally and in writing.
  • Technical Support: Proficiency with Canva, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Could, and website content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress.
  • Media Relations: Experience creating advocacy and educational materials including newsletters, content for social media, email alerts, and websites.
  • Self-Management: Self-starter with strong follow-through and the ability to meet deadlines with limited supervision. Attention to detail, excellent organization, and time-management skills.
  • Teamwork: Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively to promote ACLU-NC objectives.

To Stand Out from Others, You Will Have:

  • Some college education or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with one or more of the ACLU of North Carolina's strategic priority areas: racial justice, immigrants’ rights, criminal law reform, gender equity, reproductive freedom, or LGBTQIA equality.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus but not required.

Compensation

Communication Interns will receive a stipend allotment of $15/hour, without regard to external funding. Other benefits include:

  • Free on-site parking. 
This is a position that is non-exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.  The ACLU-NC/LF is a unionized employer, and the Communications Intern position is not part of the union bargaining unit. Compensation and benefits are not subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
