American Association of Orthodontists - the AAO is Hiring an Instructional Design Specialist Near St. Louis, MO

Position Summary: This role is critical to the professional development of AAO members through helping staff and volunteer members create successful learning programs. This role focuses almost exclusively on understanding member needs and helping those involved in content creation address those needs. This role will also be instrumental in helping the AAO measure outcomes. This role will be responsible for working cross-functionally to meet various learning objectives and implement various learning methods. This is very much a member-facing role that requires one to be outgoing and possess excellent leadership and communication skills. This role requires excellent time management, the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a timely and efficient manner. This role also requires creativity and flexibility as the infrastructure for delivery of learning content is being reconstructed.


Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with the Learning and Professional Development team in the design of the AAO’s learning platform to optimize learners’ outcomes.
  • Liaison with the Council on Orthodontic Practice (COOP) Webinar & Online Education Subcommittee, and the Council on Education (COE) Quarterly Residency Programming Subcommittee in the creation of their webinar content. This includes program development, speaker selection and contracting, managing communications and post-event follow-up.
  • Collaborate with Learning and Professional Development team in the re-design of the Ortho Staff Club to add value and optimize the experience.
  • Lead the re-design effort of the AAO’s Practice Transition Portal.
  • Assist all other Councils and Committee with the content development of their programs. This includes (but is not limited to) consulting with staff and volunteers in the following workgroups.
  • Society of Educators (SOE)
  • Committee on Conferences & Meetings (CCON)
  • Special Committee on Women Orthodontists (SCWO)
  • Council on Government Affairs (COGA)
  • Professional Advocacy Committee (AAOPAC)
  • Council on Orthodontic Benefits (COB)
  • Business Development Committee (BDC)
  • Council on New and Younger Members (CONYM)
  • Leadership Development Committee (LDC)
  • Council on Membership, Ethics & Judicial Concerns (COMEJC)

This work may include developing content that is presented in-person, virtually, through print, in manuals, videos, tools or other job aides, etc

  • Lead the re-design effort of the AAO’s Financial Management for Residents program.
  • Marketing / Communication responsibilities include providing information and feedback on the marketing of COOP and COE webinars via: email, socials, texts, print, and website
  • Work on new projects with cross-functional teams as assigned by Manager, Learning & Professional Development.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS/BA in a Instructional Design or related field
  • 3 years of experience in an adult learning setting
  • Prior work experience in collecting and analyzing learner data
  • Prior experience working with Learning Management Systems and content governance.
  • Prior work in higher-education and / or non-profit association is a plus.

  • The selected candidate must be outgoing and possess excellent leadership
  • The selected candidate must demonstrate excellent listening skills, written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to think on-the-fly
  • Independent work is well managed and done with limited supervision
  • Ability to multitask and work cross functionally
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills result in quality work, even under pressure
  • Excellent project management skills delivering quality projects on time and on budget
  • Demonstrates high moral values of honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Sedentary inside office work with no exposure to weather conditions. Requires ability to lift, pack and unpack boxes of supplies.

Requires attendance at some evening and weekend meetings throughout the year.

  • Approximately 15-20 subcommittee meetings held on weeknights
  • At least 3 all-day meetings on Saturdays.

Occasional travel is required:

  • The AAO Annual Session (typically 6 days over a weekend late April/early May)
