DESCRIPTION

Join us at Amazon Web Services on the Amazon EMR/Athena team to make a difference in the world of Big Data and Analytics!
Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) is a pioneering web service that enables customers to efficiently manage massive clusters using open-source data processing frameworks, such as Apache Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Presto, and HBase. Our service caters to a broad range of customer needs, from analytics to machine learning, offering highly scalable solutions. Amazon Athena is a serverless query service that simplifies analyzing data directly in Amazon S3 using standard SQL.
The EMR/Athena Fundamentals team plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction and executing the product release process. The team is responsible for integrating and packaging the latest features from the Open Data Analytics organization and delivering robust, thoroughly tested analytics products to our customers.
As a SysDE III (Senior System Development Engineer), you will lead the EMR/Athena release processes to improve efficiency, security, stability, and coverage. Your expertise will be crucial in independently delivering complex projects to streamline the release process, either on your own or by planning and overseeing the work of other engineers. You will manage the entire lifecycle of releases, from creation to deployment, either by utilizing existing internal tools or by innovating and creating new ones. Your role will involve resolving highly ambiguous projects, defining core requirements, and formulating effective strategies to achieve project objectives. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining the security of the release process and promoting a culture of security awareness within the team. You will also oversee the infrastructure of our internal testing and simulation environments, consisting of both synthetic and user-generated test benches. This position requires exceptional communication skills and the ability to influence, negotiate, and build consensus with senior stakeholders.
Embracing Amazon's principle of Customer Obsession, you will proactively address customer issues with our analytics products. Your responsibilities will include reproducing and diagnosing customer issues, and leading the team in developing long-term solutions. Furthermore, you will contribute to the strategic direction of the Release team and collaborate with other teams to ensure the team's work aligns with broader organizational goals.

Amazon's culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 14 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust.

Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we're building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, yet kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Partner with a global team of builders to enhance existing software tools/infrastructure and to develop innovative solutions.
* Design and lead the development of software solutions/tools to improve the efficiency, quality, and speed of teams involved in AWS projects.
* Address infrastructure challenges related to software, big data, and large-scale backend cloud services, with the goal of providing a seamless customer experience.
A day in the life
In your role, you will embody a unique blend of deep technical expertise, leadership prowess, and a fervent passion for software, data, and infrastructure solutions, complemented by your adept coaching abilities. Daily, you will showcase exemplary organizational and communication skills, navigating the complexities of a dynamic environment with agility—both independently and through the leadership of others. Your proficiency in managing intricate software products will shine as you adeptly translate business cases into technical specifications, crafting reliable and scalable solutions that meet the evolving needs of the business.
Mentorship is a cornerstone of your day, as you invest time in guiding other engineers, fostering their career growth within Amazon, and ensuring their journey is marked by success and fulfillment. Your interactions are not limited to mentorship alone; you will actively engage in a variety of technical activities. This might include writing code in Java or other popular programming languages, scripting in Bash to automate tasks, or delving into the latest innovations in big data technologies and software-defined infrastructure. Your versatility in technology will be a testament to your commitment to excellence and innovation.
Your deep knowledge in building stable and scalable software and data solutions will be indispensable. With a rich background in database technologies and the design of parallel systems, you will navigate the challenges of data management and processing with expertise. Whether optimizing performance, ensuring data integrity, or exploring new ways to handle vast datasets, your skills will be crucial in advancing the company's technological infrastructure.
Through your actions and decisions, you will contribute significantly to the team's success, ensuring that the solutions developed not only meet the immediate needs but also align with Amazon's long-term vision and objectives.
