Amazon.com is Hiring an User Experience Designer, Internal Audit Engineering Near Boston, MA

  • 5 years of design experience
  • 3 years of delivering design solutions as a UX designer or interaction designer experience
  • Have an available online portfolio
  • Experience prototyping (HTML, XHTML, JavaScript, CSS, Flash or Flash Catalyst, or Axure)
We are seeking an experienced UX designer to work directly with developers and product managers as they produce essential user-facing internal tools for Internal Audit. You will tackle problems with a high degree of ambiguity, and will be able to raise the bar by defining the overall design strategy of the team as well as by inventing tactical interface improvements which streamline users' experience with our tools.
Although the team is small, the software that we create has a large impact. It is essential for the evaluation of software systems used by and developed by all of Amazon. Due to that, this position provides candidates with a unique opportunity to truly push the needle at Amazon.
Beyond practicing traditional UXD roles, you will have numerous opportunities to cross-train, learning skill-sets from your peers as you collaborate with them daily. You can similarly expect opportunities to share your knowledge and skills with your peers, leading learning sessions and engaging in conversations daily that will facilitate their UX capabilities. The team treats career and personal growth as vitally important to its success, and so you will also have opportunities to connect with UXD mentors, engage in career growth activities (e.g. workshops), and receive support from your team as you continue to grow in your career.
Key job responsibilities
  • Scope, prioritize, and deliver effective designs by utilizing wireframes, mock-ups, information architecture diagrams, interaction specifications, interactive prototypes, and other design artifacts.
  • Create designs that are compatible with existing UI frameworks implemented in React.
  • Practice data driven decision making: survey and interview users, lead group testing, and utilize this data to make informed decisions with a high degree of confidence in their success.
  • Own the production of bar-raising deliverables and artifacts for presentation to engineers, managers, and users.
  • Lead the presentation of deliverables, driving agreement and alignment between the participants.
  • Have relentless desire for innovation, balanced with business needs, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Positively and succinctly communicate complex design concepts to your peers, facilitating their growth in the UX space.
  • Approach problems with a "yes, and" mentality, promoting discussions and the sharing of UX ideas from non-UXD peers and stakeholders.
A day in the life
There are multiple projects in active development across Internal Audit Engineering. These efforts are led by a diverse group of technical individuals: SDEs, TPMs, Security Engineers, Data Engineers, etc. You will be expected to communicate with these groups on a daily basis, collaborating with them in order to create a unified look-and-feel across the tools that we produce. Beyond defining the strategic direction of these on-going projects, you will also work directly with the developers to respond to user feedback and tactically improve already implemented components. Although we take care to create high-quality deliverables, we do not seek perfection on our first attempt. Therefore, whether defining strategic direction or designing tactical improvements, you will be expected to operate in a quick, iterative cycle: gather requirements, prototype, get feedback, implement, and repeat on a weekly basis.
About the team
Just as we expect a lot from you, you can also expect a lot from us. At Amazon, and especially on this team, we take the tenet "Develop the Best" very seriously. As such, this position presents an excellent growth opportunity for candidates. Not only will you will be given plenty of technical opportunities, but you will also be given all of the support needed to hit your goals. In the end, we all work together to contribute to the same features, and the most important metric for our team is that we hit those collective goals. You will not be working in a silo, and you can expect daily opportunities to work directly with your peers on challenging issues. We want you to learn and to take on new tasks that push your limits, and we want to make sure that you have the support you need to do so.
We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:
Arlington, VA, USA | Boston, MA, USA
  • 2 years of mass-market consumer web / mobile products experience
  • Experience working in a collaborative team and working directly with developers for implementation of designs
