PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Work under the guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse to maintain routine clinic records, provide minor first aid care, and conduct health screenings. Effect the efficient operation of office routines and practices associated with a busy, productive, and smoothly run office.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

High school diploma or equivalent

College and computer classes helpful

Proof of typing >40 WPM

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Effective communication skills (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

Working knowledge of data processing systems and applications

Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines

Basic math skills

Close attention to detail; accuracy is a high priority

Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Suite

Ability to meet deadlines

Proof of typing >40 WPM- required

Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment; special needs adaptive

equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling,

and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting

(45 pounds or more)

Environment: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain professional demeanor under

stress; Must have problem solving skills; exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and

communicable diseases

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under

stress

Regular attendance is an essential function

Minimum Experience:

Have appropriate clerical, secretarial or other school experience as required by supervisor


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Health Room

  • Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illness according to a detailed protocol established by the school nurse (RN) or medical advisor.
  • Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures and maintain accurate log of medications dispensed.
  • Assist with screening programs, take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure), and accurately document results as proscribed by district, state, and federal requirements. Communicate findings to supervising school health staff for direction.
  • Maintain student health records including immunization records, medication administration records, and screening records.
  • Assist with medical needs of students (asthma management, diabetes care, orthopedic needs, food allergy management, catheterizations, diaper changes, etc.)
  • Annual CPR/AED training.
  • Assist with Texas Department of Health required screening programs and maintains vision and hearing certifications.
  • Assists with student immunization compliance.
  • Escort students to and from health room and assist students with disabilities as necessary.
  • Contact parents of students who need to be picked up from school according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
  • Contact emergency medical services (EMS) according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
  • Maintain an efficient and safe clinic including following infection control procedures as directed by the school nurse (RN). Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care.
  • Prepare, compile, maintain, and file all correspondence, reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate and confidential student health records.
  • Maintain a daily log of health office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable disease data, and referrals to school nurse (RN).
  • Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Office Attendance/Clerical Responsibilities

  • Request student records and assist with enrollment and withdrawal of students.
  • Record and file incoming application records; correlate and send outgoing records to requesting school or Administration Building; update and maintain student enrollment database records.
  • Conduct student survey(s) and compile data; document survey data in database format.
  • Assist students, parents, and teachers who come in the office.
  • Answer telephone, record absences, take messages.
  • Process late student arrivals; keep database records of tardies (excused or unexcused); send out detention notices and document detentions served (or not served).
  • Enter attendance information for teachers; provide periodic verification of attendance data.
  • Work closely with counselor or office staff to prepare student schedules and attendance rosters.
  • Type correspondence and memos for Principal and Assistant Principal.
  • Type and process requisitions, vandalism reports, accident reports, student insurance claims and fire reports if required by supervisor.
  • Be familiar with the responsibilities of the secretary, if it becomes necessary to substitute in this position. Also, assist the secretary as needed in counting and receipting monies.

General

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform such other tasks and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers including the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
