Altoona Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is Hiring a Dental Assistant Near Altoona, PA

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Oral Surgery Assistant

Reports to: Dr. Goddard

Main Function: Responsible for assisting the surgeon in the clinical treatment of patients

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of accredited dental assisting program or graduate of surgical technician program
  • Commitment to CE for career development (ACLS, PALS, DAANCE certification)

Experience:

  • Dental or surgical assisting experience preferred
  • Computer Skills (Microsoft Office, DSN)
  • Compliance with state oral surgery practice requirements (X-ray requirements, OSHA training, BLS)

Essential Functions:

Patient Management

  • Greet patients when they sign in, and monitor arrival times
  • Set up treatment rooms for procedures
  • Obtain radiographs (CBCT, Panorex and Periapicals) as needed
  • Take dental impressions as needed
  • Perform light lab work
  • Take clinical photographs as needed
  • Escort patients to treatment room
  • Seat patients in treatment rooms
  • Show care and concern, and help patients feel comfortable
  • Obtain and review health histories according to office protocol (record vitals)
  • Ensure patients are always attended
  • Anticipate and assist surgeon’s needs
  • Apply patient monitors and record vitals
  • Assists in the monitoring of patients under conscious sedation or general anesthesia
  • Helps with the recovery of sedated patients
  • Ensure patient’s questions are answered thoroughly before they leave
  • Chart patients and record date, service rendered and any charges
  • Escort patients from the treatment room
  • Ensure proper treatment notes are recorded in patient’s chart
  • Perform clinical procedures as practice act allows and as directed by surgeon
  • Give patient pre- and postoperative instruction and demonstrate when necessary
  • Monitor patient flow
  • Record patient name, procedure, phone number, and other pertinent information for surgeon’s post-op phone call

Treatment Room Management and Sterilization

  • Keep operatories ready, stocked, and clean
  • Oversee cleanliness of the treatment room according to sterilization procedures
  • Disinfect treatment rooms according to OSHA regulations
  • Sterilize all instruments and handpieces according to OSHA regulations
  • Keep trays, instruments and treatment room drawers organized
  • Ensure that office sterilization procedures document is on display
  • Monitor and maintain sterilization equipment
  • Promptly send out and monitor all dental laboratory cases
  • Implement the preventative maintenance/cleaning schedule for surgical equipment
  • Monitor and maintain oral surgery office emergency kit, nitrous, and oxygen tanks
  • Follow laboratory procedures according to office protocol

Records Management

  • Securely store and handle patient records in compliance with state and federal requirements, including the HIPAA privacy and security regulations
  • Accurately chart and file patient information
  • Arrange patient charts and radiographs for next day’s appointments
  • Track cases and referrals to and from other doctors

Inventory Management

  • Monitor inventory and order surgical supplies as needed
  • Ensure that treatment rooms are stocked at all times

Office Participation

  • Help in other areas of the office when necessary (i.e., answering phones, unpacking supplies, completing insurance forms, etc.)
  • Be an active participant in team meetings, CE, and training scenarios
  • Promote team concept by interacting with others in the office
  • Set up presentation materials and deliver food for in-service events
  • Present suggestions for improvement in office safety, procedures, and efficiency
