About us

Alternatives (for the Older Adult, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3), private, non-profit organization serving sixteen counties in Midwestern Illinois. Since 1984, it has been the mission of Alternatives to promote the independence and quality of life for older adults, adults with disabilities and their families. Alternatives' professionals are connecting with ONE IN FIVE individuals over the age of 60 in a sixteen-county region.

BASIC SCOPE/PURPOSE:

Manages day-to-day operation of the Ombudsman Program and directs service of the Ombudsman Program.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Support and Supervises Ombudsman Staff.

Hire, train, evaluate and assign work to Ombudsman staff. Provide training and supervision in line with standards and policies and assure staff meets training requirements. Conduct annual evaluations.

2. Implementation of Long-Term Care Program.

Oversee the identification, investigation, and resolution of complaints made by or on behalf of residents of LTC facilities utilizing consumer centered comprehensive assessment and investigation. Handle and direct complex cases using a multi-disciplinary approach. Knowledgeable of all programs and supplemental programs available to residents and can identify residents to receive those services.

3. Resident Rights.

Inform residents of long-term care, assisted and supportive living facilities of their rights and advocates for resident rights. Visit licensed long term care facilities within the Alternatives geographic area, in accordance with program standards.

4. Documentation.

Train staff in Ombuds Manager and assure that appropriate documentation is completed within timelines and that documentation meets all requirements for quality and compliance.

5. Compliance.

Ensure compliance with LTCOP standards, Alternatives, and other regulatory guidelines. Complete accurate and timely reports as required by IDOA, WIAAA, and United Way.

6. Grant Monitoring.

Assure that grant objectives and activities are achieved, and cost allocated appropriately. Meets plan and grant goals. Maintain data for grant reports.

7. Networking.

Network with other State Ombudsman organizations to promote and improve the program and to keep informed of trends. Coordinate with other programs to facilitate appropriate internal referrals and collaborations. Provide community education for agency program visibility.

8. Caregiver Advocate.

Connect with assigned caregiver, listen and advocate for individual challenges that are identified and connect them to relevant, available supports and resources. Facilitate family meetings (virtually or in person) to provide peer support and resources or support needed to caregivers of loved ones in nursing homes, to caregivers of loved ones living at home, and/or to grandparents raising grandchildren.

8. Other Duties as Assigned.

Assists to ensure smooth operations of services in alignment with agency mission and completes other related tasks as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Must have an RN, BSN, or BA/BS in Social Work or related field, and have 3 years of work experience in advocacy, aging, social services, health care or related field. This position requires regular travel, so a valid driver's license and transportation are required.
