Alternatives for Girls is Hiring a Case Planner/Counselor Near Detroit, MI

Job Summary:

The Case Planner/Counselor supports AFGs mission, and the goal to deliver case management services and intensive therapeutic counseling for individuals, families and groups in the Shelter/TIL program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Screen, clinically assess and process referrals for intake into the shelter program.
  • Develop treatment plans for program participants. Provide individual and family counseling.
  • Provide crisis intervention and referrals for mental health services.
  • Facilitate therapeutic groups that meet the specific needs of program participants.
  • Schedule meetings with parents/guardians, school social workers and counselors.
  • Participate in case conferences to moderate and ensure client progress.
  • Assist program participants seeking employment or meeting educational goals.
  • Assess housing and psychosocial needs.
  • Maintain accurate and complete treatment files. Complete HMIS documentation.
  • Prepare a case conference report twice each month. Complete progress evaluations, discharge summaries and letters to referral sources.
  • Develop strong relationships with other agencies to facilitate client access to needed services.
  • Participate in community activities and assist with the distribution of educational materials.
  • Maintain aftercare contact with program participant minors.
  • Provide direct care and supervision of shelter residents, as needed.

  • Ability to set priorities, take initiative and meet deadlines
  • Good communication skills, diplomacy and tact
  • Good decision-making, conflict-resolution and effective listening skills
  • Ability to handle crisis, cope with job stress and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, nights and weekends

Acquired Knowledge:

  • Requires a masters degree in social work, counseling, psychology, sociology or criminal justice and a Limited License MSW (LLMSW) or State of Michigan licensure; plus
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working with youth who are juvenile offenders, homeless or involved in high-risk activities, such as: gangs, violence, drugs, truancy, sexual activity
  • A minimum of 1 year of clinical experience, and familiarity with the Detroit community and its resources is strongly preferred.
  • Must possess a current drivers license, good driving record and reliable transportation
