About the organization

Our client, Food Solutions Action (FSA), is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that aims to advance policies that expedite the adoption of alternative proteins (meat made from plant-based and cellular agriculture). FSA is looking for a California Policy Manager to lead policy efforts at the state level to transition our food system to a more sustainable one, combat food insecurity, and advance an important climate technology.

Job Overview

The California Policy Manager will be responsible for leading the state policy efforts of FSA, including developing and implementing the organization’s state policy agenda, creating policy strategy in collaboration with the team, communicating with state legislators and their offices, and coordinating with NGO partners. The California Policy Manager will work directly with the State Policy Director to craft and advocate for legislation and develop and maintain relationships with state legislators. 

Responsibilities 

The primary responsibilities of the California Policy Manager are:

• Crafting a comprehensive policy agenda for FSA in California. 
• Building and maintaining relationships with California legislators and agency officials and political officials to inform and facilitate the development of favorable policy. 
• Spearheading California policy work, including objectives such as securing public funding to establish a shared commercial facility for alternative protein companies, and securing additional R&D support, and others. 
• Working with alt protein companies based in California to set up tours with CA legislators. 
• Coordinating with local NGOs to devise and implement strategies for appropriate engagement and collaboration on FSA’s policy priorities.
• Locating, retaining, and managing local consultants or firms and other experts as necessary.
• Supporting FSA’s state work in other states as needed.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess:

• A passion for Food Solutions Action’s core values,
• Two or more years of relevant work experience in the California state government or lobbying,
• Excellent communication skills, including persuasive and analytical writing, and public speaking,
• A broad substantive knowledge of food policy, including the state and local landscape
• Strong analytical skills, especially the ability to quickly grasp complex issues, to identify key points, and to make recommendations based on analysis,
• Strong self-direction and self-motivation,
• Experience in strategic visioning, mapping and movement building (preferred),
• Demonstrated experience in building/supporting broad base of relationships in a movement space

Salary and Location

This is a full-time position with an annual salary range of $70,000-$110,000, depending on experience.

The ideal candidate would be based in California and able to travel to Sacramento on a regular basis (up to once per month for 3-5 business days), but residency location is flexible.
