Gate inspector/ Material Inspector/ Attendant

Summary

The Ferrous Inspector supports plant operations through the inspection of different grades of ferrous metals. This includes a high level of customer service and interactions with the public and customers. Must be familiar with and adhere to service requirements, equipment and operator limitations, and safe operating procedures at all times. Performs cleanup activities on a routine basis. Performs other duties as directed by management.

Essential Job Functions

Will perform the following:

• Interact with vendors.
• Emphasize safety as a top priority for vendors and employees.
• Identify acceptable/unacceptable incoming material.
• Identify acceptable incoming material for limited processing.
• Validation of processes for production and service provision.
• Monitoring and measurement of the product.
• Control of Nonconforming Product.
• Ensure that all information for inspection tickets and production work is submitted in an accurate and timely manner.
• Ensure all Ferrous Production inspection meets the quality standards of the ISO certification established by the company.
• Ensure that interactions with the public are done in a professional manner.
• Ensures a safe work environment for self and others at all times.
• Operates and/or drives equipment as required.
• Supplies production facility and/or stockpiles raw feed or finished products.
• Operates forklift.
• Keeps management aware of any delays or discrepancies.
• Will inspect the load for nonconforming materials and verify that the product meets customer specifications
• Iron yard products should be inspected for nonconforming materials, including dirt and mud.
• Size specifications should also be a consideration.
• Ensure that the product meets customer specifications as loaded for delivery.
• When production begins, inspect the material on the picking belt for nonconforming material.
• Upon identifying materials that are not iron remove them from the flow.
• When production stops: make sure all chutes are not plugged; clean under dirt belt; clean underneath all tail pulleys,
• Maintain the picking line area: keep catwalks clean and clear of debris, empty all hoppers; empty copper hopper into copper stockpile; return empty hoppers to proper location; inspect shaker pans during production and when not running; be aware of any unusual noises that may indicate equipment failure; control of Nonconforming Product; control for Production and Service Provision.
• Keeps yard clean, well organized, and safe
• Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out simple one or two-step instructions
• Informing/communicating with the Yard personnel.
• Ensure that the Quality, Environmental, and Safety Standards of Metalico, Inc. for production, customers and employees are consistently achieved.
• Performs other tasks as assigned or requested

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED.
• Experience with different grades of ferrous metals preferred.
• Industry experience in scrap, metal preferred
• Prior experience with hand tools, preferred, but not required
• Ability to work inside or outside as required
• Attention to detail and accuracy
• Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits
• Punctual and reliable; good attendance required
• Good communication skills
• Team-player
• Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills; must be willing to cross-train on other equipment
• Ability to adhere to work schedule and follows through on challenges as they arise.
• Ability to adhere to Company policies and rules that are set forth; promotes the Company’s safety standards; works with a sense of honesty and trustworthiness.
• Basic math, reading and writing English skills are required.

• Outside/Inside work in the yard is where temperatures and weather extremes may be encountered.
• Work will take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust, and fumes.
• The noise level in the work environment can be moderate at times.

Work Hours
Monday through Friday with a 40-hour workweek; overtime as necessary.
