Position Title: Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant

Reports To: Direct Supervisor

Supervises: Non-supervisory

Position Summary: Responsible for the delivery of skilled occupational therapy services to the patient in setting following established plan of care by the Occupational Therapist

Essential Job Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Demonstrates, through documentation and practice, knowledge of human physiology, pathology and diagnosis related to the ICD-10, as it relates to occupational therapy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge on billing including service and time based codes, RUGs, MDS rules, and other items necessary to complete successful billing for each patient.
  • Assist the occupational therapist in rendering the specific services set forth on the plan of care and any modifications set forth from the patient’s physician.
  • Observes, records and reports to the OTR and patient’s physician any pertinent change in the patient’s condition and response to treatment.
  • All notes written by the COTA will be co-signed by the supervising OTR (if state requires).
  • Follows preventative, and rehabilitative procedures as appropriate to the patient’s care and safety per plan of care from supervising OTR.
  • Identifies the patient’s need for modification of treatment or initiation of additional services as needed and provides information to supervising occupational therapist.
  • Reviews home programs for patients, families, and/or caregivers with the occupational therapist as a facilitator, promotes family-centered therapy practices.
  • Instructs and advises patient, family, and other health care professional in regards to the proper use of orthotics, ADL assistive devices and other durable medical equipment.
  • Treats patients through the use of therapeutic activities designed to restore function and self-care activities for the purpose of improving function.
  • Instructs and advises patient, families, and other health care professionals concerning treatment, programs, techniques and procedures as designated by the supervising Occupational Therapist.
  • Demonstrates and teaches alternative techniques to complete activities of daily living, proper transfers, and positioning.
  • Assists in the discharge process of patients in accordance with established goals and plan of care and Allstar Therapies, Inc policy and procedures.
  • Maintains weekly schedule of patient visits based upon the individual patient’s plan of care.
  • Attends or provides necessary communication in regards to regularly scheduled meeting to discuss patient care.
  • Keeps current with physical therapy practices and provides proof of ongoing clinical practice through attending education seminars, in-services, and reviews current concepts and literature. Attends the required number of in-services, and reviews current concepts and literature. Attends the required number of in-services held at the corporate office each year.
  • Orders and/or fabricates adaptive/assistive device and durable medical equipment.
  • Reviews delivery of care to the patient with the supervising occupational therapist as outlined by specific setting and state guidelines.
  • Completes all documentation in a timely fashion which follows all standards and policies set forth by Allstar Therapies, Inc, and submits all paperwork within time frame identified by facility policy, and/or home health agency.
  • Follows all HIPAA Guidelines and practices confidentiality and respect for patient’s rights.
  • Follows universal precautions to limit risk and exposure.
  • Regularly provides updates regarding changes in items needed for employment including annual TB test, CPR card, etc.
  • Follows all guidelines set forth by facility and/or agency Policy and Procedure manual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the company.


Requirement/Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited occupational therapist assistant program
  • Licensed as a COTA in the current state
  • Current registration with the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Preferably two (2) years’ experience as a COTA.

Certificates, License, Registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Licensed to practice in the state
  • Certification in CPR

Degree of Travel: Frequent and often (may be applicable)

Language Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with clients, caregivers, family members, and medical professionals.

Degree of Disruption to Routine: It is to be expected that there will be moderate disruption to a daily routine. Although schedules are set accordingly on several occasions’ adaptations and other arrangements may be needed to service the patient and the contract for superior customer service and contract regulations.
