Scientific Illustrator – Annotation and Illustration

The mission of the Allen Institute for Brain Scienceis to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through the integration of experiments, modeling, and theory.

We are looking for a Scientific Illustrator to join our efforts to build 3D common coordinate frameworks of human and mammalian brains as a reference tool for neuroscience research across many institutions. This person will be an essential contributor to delineation of anatomical boundaries of brain structures across species under supervision of a senior neuroanatomist. Ideal candidates will have a background in biological sciences and experience with use of common drawing tools such as Illustrator, adobe photoshop and ITK-SNAP and will receive training in basic neuroanatomy.

Essential Functions

  • Closely work with a senior neuroanatomist to understand the structures and components of the human and non-human primate brains
  • Draw structural boundaries using Illustrator, adobe photoshop and ITK-SNAP on 2D brain sections and in 3D brain spaces
  • Smooth and revise the boundaries in 3D brain spaces
  • Prepare illustration and figures for presentation or manuscript publication
  • Contribute to other on-going efforts

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, experience, or certification in graphic design or a related discipline
  • Experience with Illustrator and Photoshop

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 1 – 3 years of experience with illustration tools such as ITK-SNAP
  • Experience generating highly precise technical illustrations for scientific or technical purposes
  • Demonstrated attention to details, strong spatial reasoning, and dedication to precision in their illustrations
  • Familiarity with basic anatomy of human, macaque or marmoset brains
  • Willingness to learn neuroanatomy at deeper levels

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently working onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is 615 Westlake Ave N.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $51,500 - $72,100*
  • Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
