Department: Highway – North and South FLSA Status: Non-exemptClassification/Level: Labor, PG-6 Date: 4/2023Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, the Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic maintains, diagnoses, and repairs County vehicles and heavy equipment and responds to service calls as needed. This position is Covered, as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains County vehicles and heavy equipment.Responds to service calls on the road for broken down vehicles or heavy equipment.Conducts electrical and mechanical repairs.Works on air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and hydraulic systems.Transports equipment and vehicles to and from worksites, as required.Operates heavy equipment to remove snow and ice.Maintains records of all vehicle and heavy equipment repairs, using descriptions of work performed and codes.Performs shop maintenance and ensures shop cleanliness.Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required. REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED and specialized training in Diesel and/or Heavy Equipment repair or related field and one year Diesel and/or Heavy Equipment maintenance and repair experienceAbility to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six monthsThorough knowledge of the accepted principles involved in gas and diesel engine repair and maintenanceWorking knowledge of diagnostics and repair proceduresThorough knowledge of air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS)Knowledge of safety procedures and precautions for working with heavy equipmentAbility to follow written and verbal instructionsExperience with Forklift and Bobcat operationAbility to weld/solder under established safety guidelines PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic performs work that is complex and varied when diagnosing vehicles and heavy equipment. Thorough knowledge is needed to perform preventative maintenance and to perform proper repairs. RESPONSIBILITY: The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic demonstrates care and skill when assisting with service calls for vehicles and heavy equipment on the road. They also recommend deviations from general instructions when necessary. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic maintains frequent contact with other County employees when completing work orders and receiving instructions.WORKING CONDITIONS: The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic works in a standard shop setting, involving frequent activities such as standing, lifting up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling, reaching overhead, kneeling, some sitting, walking, and climbing ladders. Additionally, mental and visual effort is required, along with tasks such as typing, equipment monitoring, and detailed inspection. The role may also involve exposure to temperature extremes, chemicals, dangerous equipment, noise, and noxious odors/fumes, requiring frequent attention to detail. SUPERVISION:None LICENSING: Ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of hire IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Fleet Manager HOURS: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm and as needed; overtime as required EEO CATEGORY: 5506 WORKERS’S COMP CODE: 0207
