General Summary:
The Track Maintainer works as part of a team installing, repairing, and rebuilding railroad track along the network. This job entails working outdoors in a labor-intensive environment.
General Duties:
Perform track maintenance, repair and installation including but not limited to:
Observe condition of tracks, track beds, and track right of way for problems or defects
Inspect track, including ties, rail, fasteners, and switches for safety defects
Lift rails using the manual track jack
Sweep, pick, and dig dust and snow from movable track parts
Remove and replace ballast
Unload or assist in unloading ballast from rail car, cart, or truck
Clip and unclip track fasteners
Dig holes and trenches
Remove and install ties with tie tongs
Handle and move track materials and equipment
Maintain track beds
Drive and pull spikes
Install and remove rail anchors
Handle, place, and align tie plates under rails
Cut in rails
Plug spike holes
Perform the following as needed:
Cut vegetation and brush
Various types of bridge maintenance
Flagging
Assist with transloading
Perform basic maintenance on all machinery
Operate manual tools, power tools and heavy pieces of machinery
Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
High School Diploma or equivalent
Must have a valid driver's license (Class A or B CDL preferred)
Experience operating construction or farm equipment
Welding experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to operate various power tools and heavy pieces of machinery
Must be able to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, procedure, and safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions and other work-related information
Effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and associates in a clear, concise, courteous, and professional manner

Demonstrate a commitment to safety in own behavior and as an example to other employees, contractors or suppliers and the public.
Compliance with company policies including Company Handbook, Railroad Operating Rules and Safety Rules, and company drug & alcohol policies.
Must have good communication and written skills.
Must be able to read and comprehend regulations and instructions as well as possess good verbal communication skills.
Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to climb on ladders
Ability to stand and/or sit for more than half of each workday with periodic breaks.
Ability to see near, far, all color, have depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to speak and hear clearly to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, yard workers, and section leaders.
Ability to balance and walk over extended areas with uneven footing
Ability to bend, twist, and crawl in open or confined spaces
Ability to bend/crouch/kneel at waist or knees between locomotive and cars.
Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 100lbs.
Ability to perform physically strenuous work for extended periods of time
Ability to exert up to 150lbs.
Ability to work in tight, confined spaces.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions: (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
Ability to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes
Work Environment:
Extreme all-weather conditions; un-even surfaces; safety sensitive work environment
