Position Summary :
These positions provide credit recovery to students involved detained at Highlands and Shuman Center through Allegheny County Juvenile Probation.
The program will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from June 23rd through August 8
The hours are 8AM-12PM each day. Positions needed are : ELA 7-12, Math 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, Science / Biology 7-12, Special Education 7-12, and School Counselor 7-12.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Design, plan and deliver coherent instruction using prescribed unit and lesson structures that align with state standards and emerging best practices, in addition to meeting student's needs as required in IEPs.
Evaluate students' progress toward their IEP goals through data collection, student work and observation.
Develop and continually update learning resources that are culturally relevant and are grounded in the practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Implementation of our PBIS and restorative practices program.
Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse learning needs of students at the juvenile detention center.
Utilize innovative and engaging teaching strategies to capture the attention of students.
Implement effective classroom management strategies to create a safe and conducive learning environment.
Address behavioral challenges and disruptions in a calm and professional manner.
Collaborate with support staff to ensure a secure and controlled classroom setting.
Assess the educational needs of individual students and create personalized learning plans.
Provide extra support for students who may be behind academically or have special educational requirements.
Work closely with other educators, counselors, and support staff to address the holistic needs of students.
Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress and develop intervention strategies.
Be prepared to handle crisis situations and emergencies within the detention center environment.
Collaborate with the center's staff to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behavior, and academic performance.
Generate reports for administrators, probation officers, or other relevant stakeholders as required.
Stay informed about the latest educational practices, especially those relevant to working with students that are justice involved.
Attend professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
Ensure compliance with educational policies and procedures within the juvenile detention center.
Stay informed about any legal or regulatory requirements related to education in detention settings.
Cover for absent teachers as needed.
Adhere to safe school practices.
Perform non-instructional duties as may be required.
Prepare and achieve annual performance expectations as prescribed or approved by the supervising administrator.
It's important to note that working in a juvenile detention center may involve additional training, background checks, and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by the students in this environment.
The ability to empathize, provide support, and maintain a positive approach is crucial for success in this role.
Qualifications
Organizational skills, initiative, and an ability to work with limited supervision.
Ability and experience in working as a member of a team.
Ability to comply with the AIU / Shuman Conduct policy and belief system.
