Performs a variety of routine and specialized duties to maintain security, custody and control to ensure the health and safety of inmates, staff, volunteers, and the public.

Starting Wage:

  • $23.71 - $24.82 per hour to start (depending on previous experience), full-time
  • This position works an 84-hour two-week pay period.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Maintains security of the correctional facility by observing and controlling inmate behavior, enforcing discipline, and reporting observations.
  2. Guide and oversee all inmate movement throughout the facility including determining best routes for escort, determine who can and cannot visit with inmates, and supervision during meal times.
  3. Inspects the living conditions within the housing units for compliance with sanitation objectives.
  4. Conducts checks of inmate housing and cell searches for inmate census and detection of contraband.
  5. Controls, operates, and inspects life safety equipment, electronic safety and surveillance equipment, and door control systems.
  6. Performs booking, fingerprinting, identification, and records maintenance procedures that may include pat-downs, entering charges into the system, preliminary medical screening, notifying supervisors of any possible intake problems, clearing inmates for release, and assisting in the transportation to and from other facilities. 
  7. Maintains the security of inmates transported to the holding area in the Courts building.
  8. Provides escort, transport services, and security of inmates to various locations.
  9. Participates in evacuation procedures and maintains security in emergency situations of the facility.
  10. Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of all information and materials encountered in performance of the officer’s duties.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • An Associates Degree in correctional sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or closely related field is preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern corrections principles, procedures, techniques, and
    equipment.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must posses, or be able to obtain a valid State Driver’s License without record of suspension or
  • revocation in any state;
  • Ability to meet and maintain department’s physical and fitness standards;
  •  Completion of Michigan Sheriff’s Training and Coordination Training Counsel 160 Hour Training Academy, Physical Abilities Testing, EMPCO pre-employment testing, and Mental Health Evaluation.
  • The ability to multi‐task in a highly paced environment while working with security and electronics while being aware of your surroundings at all times;
  • Able to work in areas with large groups or numbers of inmates;
  • Carries and safely deploys department approved and issued firearms and other defensive weapons when so directed.
